Road to Revolution

  • Period: to

    The Enlightenment

The enlightenment was a cultural movement during the 17th and 18th centuries. Its purpose was to reform society using reason, challenge ideas based on tradition and faith, and advance knowledge. I rate this event a 6 because it was the period which led into the many events before change, and the politiccal ideals of the enlightenment influenced the Declaration of Independence.
  • Period: to

    The French and Idian War

This war was fought between the colonies of British America and New France. During this war, the proclamation of 1763 was established, prohibiting colonists to settle west. England created a huge debt for themselves, and to pay off the debt they chose to tax the colonists. I would rate this event a 6 because taxing was a big deal for the colonists, but was not one of the primary reasons for creating our own government.
  • The Proclomation Line of 1763

    The Proclomation Line of 1763
    Picture
The Proclamation line prohibited colonists from settling west of the Appalachian Mountains to avoid conflict with Native Americans. I rate this event a 4 because it wasn't necessarily one of the more important events that influenced the colonists to create their own government. Although, it was one of the first events that made the colonists realize that independence was a necessity for their people.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    Picture
This was another act issued by the British people where all printed documents had to have a stamp. The colonists responded to the act by boy-cotting british goods, meaning they refused to buy goods from england. As a result, the act was repeated. I would rate this event a 7 because all of these different acts kept repeating which made the colonists extremely mad, and soon led to the boston massacre.
  • The Boston Massacre

    The Boston Massacre
    Picture
The Boston Massacre was when the colonial protesters clashed with British troops in Boston resulting in the deaths of five colonists. This event is exaggerated by many, seeing that only 5 people died in this small arguement. The picture is very misleading as well. I rate this event a 4 because, unfortunately, disagreements such as these occur daily, and was only a small contribution to the revolution.
  • The Tea Act

    The Tea Act
    Picture
This was one of the taxes the British imposed on the colonists. This act was one of the last the British decided to install, which soon led the colonists to realize some type of new government had to be established. I rate this event a 6 because it really did spark an interest into the minds of the colonists, which soon led them to rebel and fight for their independence.
  • Boston Tea Party

    Boston Tea Party
    Picture
The tea act was a new act put on tea. The Sons of Liberty staged a strange protest. They dressed up as mohawk idians, and threw tons of cases of tea off the British boats and into the Boston Harbor. I rate this event an 8 because these acts kept adding to the recent conflicts that kept ocurring. This act also showed the British that the colonists were going to fight for what they believed
    was fair.
  • Intolerable Acts

    Intolerable Acts
    href='http://http://mrberlin.com/intolerableactspowerpointpresentation.aspx' >picture</a>
This event was a group of three new acts made to punish the colonists, instituted by the British because of their anger concerning the Boston Tea Party. No trial by jury, the quartering act, and a blockade of Boston were the three restricitions issued. I would rate this event a 7, because it did contribute to the start of the revolution, but was just one of the many events that led the people to fight.
  • The First Continental Congress

    The First Continental Congress
    Picture
The first continental congress consisted of representatives, or delegates, from 12 of the colonies met in Philidelphia to adress the intolerable acts. They soon decided to send a letter to King George III asking him to repeal the acts. He did not. I rate this event a 5 because it quickly progressed the movement of the revolution, but the second continental made the final decision towards independence.
  • Lexington and Concord

    Lexington and Concord
    Picture
The British were getting suspicious that weapons were being held in Concord so they sent troops to patrol. On their journey there, the British ran into New England volunteers in Lexington who used guerilla warfare tactics to fight against. Unfortunately, the British defeated the militia in Lexington and also defeated more in Concord. I would give this event a 7 because many colonists volunteered to fight showing will.
  • Second Continental Congress

    Second Continental Congress
    href='http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/0/0d/Congress_voting_independence.jpg/250px-Congress_voting_independence.jpg' >Picture</a>
The second continental congress was when the delegates meet again to discuss the relevant struggles. Not everyone was on board with the idea of independence. Thomas Paine creatively wrote common sense, impacting most to vote in favor of independence. I rate this event an 8 because this meeting and decision lead to the making the constitution.
  • Declaration of Independence

    Declaration of Independence
    picture
The Declaration of Independence was a written document, but Thomas Jefferson took the lead. He takes a lot of ideas from Rousseau and Locke, following is 27 examples of British tyranny. Jeffereson states how it is our responsibility to grasp independence. I would rate this event a 10 because it was the main reason the revolution began, and independence was all of the people of the new world were fighting for.
