  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    The Missouri Compromise was an agreement that above 36, 30 N all the states would be free states but below would be slave states. Then Missouri wanted to be a slave state but congress wouldn't allow it because it would make the congress askew for pro slavery. So what congress did was make Maine a free state and allow Missouri to become a slave state. This made congress still equal with pro and anti slavery.

    Wilmot Proviso
    After the Mexican american war america gained a lot of new land. Polk wanted to end slavery in this new area. The Wilmot Proviso was made to do this. This tore congress apart but wasn't passed because a torn congress. This helped make the republican party in 1854.

    The fugitive slave act were new laws that really helped the south. It said that any slaves that escaped to the north could be captured and brought back. This made a new type of people called slave hunters where they would go in the north and hunt run away slaves. People who were free since birth were taken because they were thought to be free slaves so they could of been taken too. The people in the north were not happy with this.

    The compromise of 1850 is another compromise by henry clay. For the north It says california is now a free state no more slave trade in D.C. and Texas loses the border dispute with mexico. For the south slavery in Utah and New mexico territories slaveholding in D.C. and texas gets 10 million also the fugitive slave act. The compromise was never really used but it made the division between the north and south even greater.

    Uncle tom's cabin was written by a northern women. This made the people in the north see what was happening to these slaves in the south. The southerners were outraged with is because they said that people from the north were getting it wrong. This made a bigger divide from north and south. When the war started lincoln said to the author so you're the lady who started the war.

    It was said that Kansas and nebraska can vote whether or not they want to have slavery or no slavery. These places weren't very organised at this time. Kansas was more of a border state to the south so people from the south came up to vote and people from the north came down to vote and fights broke out throughout kansas. This made ways for new parties like the wig and republican party.
  • Dred Scott Case

    Dred Scott Case
    Mr. Dred Scott attempted to sue his way to being free, and it did not work whatsoever. He got a lawyer and took his case to the court, but unfortunately it was ruled that he did not have the right to sue anyone since he was an African american. He was then sold back into slavery, but the issue was not done, the northerners were angry while the southerners rejoiced. This only made the issue over slavery worse. Slavery was now legal everywhere.

    Lincoln Douglas Debate

    These were a series of debates between the two men which they traveled across the country. Douglas believed that individual states have the right to decide whether they want slavery or not, much like Kansas Lincoln believed slavery was terrible and should not be in any state Douglas did win the debate, but Lincoln became more of a public image and icon, fueling his route to presidency

    John Brown’s Raid

    John Brown raised a group of followers to help him free slaves in the South, they attacked the town of Harpers Ferry Virginia, seizing guns and planned to start a revolt, he was captured by Robert E. Lee, the northerners praised Brown's attempt, but he was eventually sentenced to be hanged. His lasting legacy might’ve pushed the north in the fight against slavery.

    The election 1860 was probably one of the most important in history. As whoever got elected would be faced with the civil war problem. In 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected president. He was one of the 4 candidates that ran for president, he was in the republican party. Lincoln gained momentum, winning every free state, and finally won the election, beating out his former rival, Douglas.
  • Southern Secession

    Southern Secession
    South Carolina voted to secede from the US, as they thought they did not have a voice. Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas all soon followed. They formed a government called the confederacy, made a constitution, and tried to create an army. Almost all Southern states believed they did not have a voice, which was the main reason, and they all formed another country, sort of. It proved to be the last straw leading to the civil war.
