The Compromise of 1850 was Henry Clay's response to divided Americans on how to handle newly acquired territories in the United States. Northerners wanted states to be free while Southerners wanted slavery. Clay proposed California as a free state, popular sovereignty elsewhere, and strengthening the Fugitive Slave Law. While this was supposed to appease both sides, it only perpetuated the divisive issues further, leading to increased tensions.
