    Brown vs. The Board of Education
    In 1954 battle of Brown vs. the Board of Education brought attention to the unequailty in the public schools across the country."The supreme courts decided that the school system did not provide equal oppertunity. After the decision in Brown, parents of children with disabilities began to bring lawsuits against their school districts for excluding and segregating children with disabilities. The parents argued that, by excluding these children, schools were discriminating against the children".
  • Devlopment In Federal Support

    Devlopment In Federal Support
    Training of Professional Personnel Act of 1959 (PL 86-158)
    -(PL 86-158) Began training administrators and teachers to educate children with disabilities. By 1968 more than 30,000 teachers and educators had been given special training.
  • "War On Poverty"

    "War On Poverty"
    -President Lyndon Baines Johnson, signed The Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). This act provided funding for education programs and started expanding the accessibility to public education to children with disabilities.
  • FAPE

    FAPE
    In 1973 IDEA was created (Individuals with disabilites education act). Under Section 504, FAPE (Free Appropriate Public Education) was created. This law insured that "an educational program that is individualized to a specific child, designed to meet that child's unique needs, provides access to the general curriculum, meets the grade-level standards established by the state, and from which the child receives educational benefit.".
  • Four Goals For Special Education

    Four Goals For Special Education
    Public law (94-142) secured the following goals.
    1.To ensure that special education services are available to children who need them
    2.To guarantee that decisions about services to disabled students are fair and appropriate
    3.To establish specific management and auditing requirements for special education
    4.To provide federal funds to help the states educate disabled students
  • 25 Years of Progress

    25 Years of Progress
    PL (99-475) mandated states to provide programs and services from birth. By this point in time programs had been put in place for early interventions and support, assisting children with physical and mental disabilites accross the country.
  • Making the Transistion

    Making the Transistion
    -PL (105-17) IDEA Amendments of 1997 started transistion services from highschool to adult living. Because of these specific amendments, transition plans were implimented in all IEP's.
