    William H. Sylvis founded the national labor union. This was the first nationwide labor organization. what Sylvis did was connect 200,000 workers in local unions, and put them into one nationwide union. They fought for higher wages and shorter hours.

    The strike at homestead mill was an event where the workers were discharged. Fights then broke out with the workers, and there had to be Pinkerton guards hired. There was lots of fighting and 3 Pinkertons and 7 workers died.

    Eugene Victor Debs founded the American Railway Union, which united all railroad workers into one union. He led workers in a strike against the Pullman Palace Car Company. He went to prison because of his leadership role in the Pullman strike, however, he still remained passionate for workers rights and labor rights.

    The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire was an event in New York City that killed 146 men and women, mainly women. It was caused by the building having only one fire escape, and many items blocking these doors. It caused many laws to be passed, including putting sprinklers inside of factories, and improving working conditions.

    Arthur Joseph Goldberg was a U.S. secretary of labor, Supreme Court justice and ambassador to the United Nations. He started out as a labor lawyer, so he always had a passion for helping out workers in need. He served as General Counsel for the CIO from 1948-1961.
