Revolutionary War Battles

  • Battle of Lexington and Concord/ Boston Massachusetts

    British troops were sent to nearby Lexington and Concord in order to seize stores of gunpowder and capture Samuel Adams and John Hancock. At Lexington, Minute Men didn't disperse rapidly and shots were fired that killed 8 Americans. Redcoats pushed to Concord and were forced to retreat by Americans.
  • Siege of Fort Ticonderoga

    Location: Ticonderoga,Essex County,New York
    A tiny American Force under Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold surprised and captured the British millitary post. The Americans were able to get gunpowder and artillery.
  • Battle of Bunker Hill

    Colonists seized a hill from which they threatened the enemy in Boston. British instead of flanking the Americans, launched a frontal attack with 3000 men. Americans(1500 men), slughtered down the redcoats. Gunpowder gave out and Americans were forced to abandon the hill.
  • Battle of Quebec

    Province of Quebec
    American forces attempted to capture the city of Quebec, drive the British from Quebec, and get support from the French-Canadian in the Revolutionary war. Montgomery and Benedidct Arnold led the American forces. Montgomery was killed and Arnold was wounded, so the remaining soldiers under his command went up to St.Lawrence River and British won the war.
  • Battle of Long Island/ (New York, Brooklyn Heights)

    Washington sent a small army to defend Brooklyn Heights on Long Island. After Sir.Williams troops defeated an American force, Putnam (American corps commander), prepared for main attack. Sir. William remembered the Bunker Hill incident and decided to lay siege instead of fighting. Washington, having no option, evacuated.
  • Battle of Fort. Washington: in NY Manhattan

    Howe planned to capture Ft. Washington, the last American stronghold in Manhattan. Washington had told Natanael Greene to abandon the fort, but he refused because he believed he could defend the fort. Howe attacked and American defenses fell quickly. Colonel Magaw surrendered so Washington's army was once again defeated.
  • Battle of Trenton/ New Jersey

    Washington crossed the icy Delaware River and surprised and captured a thousand Hessians who were sleeping off the effects of a Christmas celebration. This was a battle that reestored American Morale.
  • Battle of Princeton/ New Jersey

    Cornwallis arrived with his troops in Trenton and was prepared to defeat Washington's army. Cornwallis knew Washington would escape over night, so he sent troops to Delaware River. Washington left campfires burning and muffled the wheels of his wagons and snuck around the British camp. As Americans headed north, they met British guard whom they defeated.
  • Battle of Brandywine Creek/ west of Philadephia, Delaware county

    Howe and Cornwallis split their 18,000 British troops into 2 parts. Howe lead the front and Cornwallis would circle around the Patriots. There was a dense fog, so Washington who was in Brandywine was surprised and outnumbered, so he ordered his men to abandon their posts and retreat. British then occupied Philadelphia.
  • Battle of Saratoga

    Burgoyne (British commander), had started to bog down north of Albany, while a host of millitiamen swarmed about him. In a series of encounters in which General Arnold was shot in the leg, the British Army was trapped. Unable to advance or retreat, Burgoyne was forced to surrender his entire command in Saratoga to American General Gates. This war made possible the needed foreign aid from France.
  • Battle of Charleston/ Georgia

    British wanted to roll up the colonies beggining with the South, where Loyalists were numerous. Charleston fell in 1780. The surrender of the city to the British involved the capture of 5000 men and 400 cannons. It was the greatest loss Americans had in the Revolution.
  • Battle of King's Mountain/ South Carolina (today is Blacksburg)

    1,000 American frontiersmen under colonel Campbell, gathered to resist Ferguson and Tory's. Ferguson positioned his Tory force in a ridge called King's Mountain. Patriots charged the hillside several times. Ferguson suicided unwilling to surrender and the rest of the men who were willing to surrender, were slaughtered by Patriots.
  • Battle of Cowpens/ South Carolina in Cherokee County

    American troops under General Morgan caused heavy casualties on the British army under colonel Tarleton. The British had mistaken the repositioning of the Americans and they ran into a rifle fire, so the British army was greatly reduced. Patriots demonstrated that American Forces could outfight a similar British force without any other factors.
  • Battle of Yorktown

    Cornwallis was in Yorktown at the mouth of Chesapeake Bay, so Washington ordered de Lafayette and an army of 5000 troops to block Cornwallis's escape by land, while French naval fleet blocked British escape by sea. Washington encircled Cornwallis who after 3 weeks surrendered, ending the War for independence in October 17, 1781
