    He was the leader of the Canadian Party, which he hoped would eventually gain political control of the colony. He had never completed his edical degree and had no intention of practising medicine.

    However, because McDougall ( appointed by John A. Macdonald to solved and governed the North West Territories) ignored Metis protest, Riel set up a Provisional Government to ensure that the Metis would have a voice. This government would help maintain order and would give the people of Red River the power to negotiate an agreement to enter Confederation.

    The Metis were angry that the HBC was selling Rupert's Land without consulting them and that the surveyors were ignoring their rights. Most felt that the Canadian government planned to take their land. So Riel formed the National Metis Committee in order to fight for Metis rights, including the right to their land.

    In early December of 1869, Riel decided to act first. A party of armed Metis arrested John Schultz and of his supporters, confining them in Upper Fort Garry.

    After the execution of Thomas Scott, Louis Riel fled from Fort Garry to the USA in fear of the Canadian police officers capturing him, Sir John A Macdonald even gave money to Riel for exile; he feared conflict between Ontario and Quebec. Twice was Louis Riel offered a seat in Parliment. Both times, he revoked the generous offer.

    On March 3,Scott went on trial for treason. After calling a number of witness, th board concluded that Scott was guilty and by a majority vote, passed the sentence of death by firing squad. On March 4, Scott was executed
