Students in first grade continue to learn about letters, sounds, and letter combinations. Students read stories that are more difficult than those read in Kindergarten. Comprehension skills begin to emerge.

In second grade, students continue to learn and practice letter combinations. There is a greater emphasis on comprehension. Students begin to read fiction and nonfiction books.

Students work less on learning letter combinations and work more on comprehension. This is the first time students are more independent in their reading.

Students read mostly on their own, sharpening their self monitoring skills. Students are becomming more independent readers.
