Pilgrim culture
In England there was state church that was very strict. If someone disagreed with the beliefs they would get imprisoned and if they still refused to change they would get tortured until they did. Pilgrims were good-natured fun loving people who insisted freedom of choice. -
Maryland Catholic Experiment
Lord Baltimore was granted all land laying between Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay, he saw this as an opportunity to grant religious freedom to Catholics who remained in Anglican England. Even though the violence was more in 1500 and 1600 Catholics were still persecuted in the 1700. Such as not being allowed to legally be married. -
Anne Hutchinson (Dissent in Massachusetts Bay)
In Massachusetts there wasn’t room for religious disagreement. Anne Hutchinson was a very religious woman, in her understanding of biblical law the ministers of Massachusetts had lost their way. This was seen as extremely dangerous, and that if Authority was ignored there would be anarchy. Her leader ship position made her seem even more dangerous, they felt that she was a threat to the Puritan experiment and eventually banned her. -
Quaker Culture
Quakers were persecuted, so when William Penn was granted land in the New World he saw it as an opportunity to free people form the religious oppression. They were oppressed for not participating in any of Britain’s wars, not paying taxes if they money would help the military, and believing in total equality.
