  • Coal Strike of 1902

    The Coal Strike of 1902 was a strike by the United Mine Workers of America. Miners struck for higher wages, shorter work days and the recognition of their union. The strike threatened to shut down the winter fuel supply to major cities. This falls under the goal of protecting social welfare because the people that were on strike worked to soften harsh conditions.

  • Northern Securities v. United states

    A case heard by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1903. The Court ruled 5 to 4 against the stockholders of the Great Northern and Northern Pacific railroad companies, who had essentially formed a monopoly, and to dissolve the Northern Securities Company.

    American law that makes it a crime to adulterate or meat products being sold as food, and ensures that meat and meat products are slaughtered and processed under sanitary conditions. This Act fall under the goal of Protecting social welfare because people advocated to help improving the lives of people.

    The United States Department of Commerce and Labor was a short-lived Cabinet department of the United States government, which was concerned with controlling the excesses of big business. Falls under creating economic control because they they noticed the unbalanced wealth among big businesses and also recognized businesses favorable treatment with the government.

    The Food and Drug Administration (FDA or USFDA) is a federal agency of the United States Department of Health and Human Services,responsible for protecting and promoting public health through the control and supervision of food safety, tobacco products, dietary supplements, prescription and over-the-counter pharmaceutical drugs (medications), vaccines. This falls under promoting moral improvement because the Food and Drug Administration promoting and protecting the control of tobacco.

    Signed into law by President William Howard Taft in 1912, during the Progressive Era, the U.S. The Children's Bureau was the brainchild of Lillian D. Wald and Florence Kelley, pioneers in children's rights advocacy. This federal agency was created to investigate and promote the best means for protecting a right to childhood. This falls under promoting social welfare because they are advocating to improve children's lives.

    The sixteenth amendment, enabling Congress to levy an income tax, was ratified on February 3, 1913. The Constitution previously required that any direct taxes collected be apportioned among the states based on population, which the sixteenth amendment challenged.
