  • Election of George Washington

    Election of George Washington
    Washington took office on February 4, 1789. The war and Constitutional Convention had made Washington a well-respected leader and hero so they asked him to be the first president. He set many precedents and set the ball rolling for the country.
  • Bill of Rights added to Constitution

    Bill of Rights added to Constitution
    The Bill of Rights was added to the Constitution on December 15, 1791. The Bill of Rights was added to help insure the rights of the people in the Constitution. Some people thought that the Constitution without the Bill Of Rights didn't do that. Without the Bill Of Rights being added the Constitution might not have been ratified.
  • Beginning of Federalist Party

    Beginning of Federalist Party
    The Federalist Party was created by Alexander Hamilton in 1792. Federalists were Americans who supported the ratification of the new Constitution of the United States. They supported a strong central government.
  • The Whisky Rebellion

    The Whisky Rebellion
    The Whisky Rebellion in 1794 was caused by a high tax on whiskey. A bunch of farmers rebelled over higher whiskey prices, because they converted their corn into whiskey. it hurt their business. George Washington himself led the army to stop the rebellion which showed that the new government was strong.

    XYZ affair: 1789. John Adams was president. France was attacking neutral American Merchant ships, so Adams sends 3 diplomats to negotiate. They demand a bribe. we replied “Millions for defence, not one cent for tribute!”

    The Alien Act was part of a series of acts signed by President John Adams on June 25, 1798. They were designed to control the activities of foreigners in the United States during the time of the empending war with France. There was the Alien Act that allowed the expulsion of aliens deemed dangerous during peactime. Then there was the Alien Enemies Act that allowed the expulsion or imprisonment of aliens deemed dangerous during wartime. That, however, was never enforced.

    The sedition act was passed on July 14, 1798 in preperation for anticipated war with France, the Sedition Act limited verbal critizing of the Government. The arguements surrounding them, however, provided for some of the first testings of the limits of freedom of speech and press.

    Thomas Jefferson was elected on February 17, 1800. Jefferson was running against John Adams. It was considered the first real election because it was the first year that there were political parties against each other.
  • John Marshall Appointed

    John Marshall was appointed Chief Justice on January 27, 1801 by President John Adams. John Adams had lost the presidential election when he ran a second time to Thomas Jefferson so he tried to get as many Federalists into the Judiciary branch before he left office. John Marshall had previously been John Adams' Secretary of State.

    the Monroe doctrine was a document that James Monroe made that said we would not get involved in other European wars on December 2. in 1823 France and Britain were fighting and wanted help from the U.S. We used the doctrine to force Europe away.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    Louisiana Purchase
    The Lousiana Purchase took place in 1803. America had been using the New Orleans Port and asked France if we could buy the port. But before America could France sold Louisiana to Spain only to regain it again under the Treaty of San Ildefonso which was actually a secret treaty. France's intentions for buying the treaty was to create a big French empire in the New World. Scared by France's intentions we bought the all of the Louisiana Territory on December 1, 1803 for $15 million.
  • Lewis and Clark Expedition

    Lewis and Clark Expedition
    The Lewis and clark expedtition was in 1804 through 1806. They had set out to find out more about the Louisiana Territory. Lewis had been chosen by President Jefferson to lead the expedition and then Lewis wrote to William Clark to join him.
  • Embargo Act

    It was a Law passed, on December 21, by Congress and signed by President Thomas Jefferson in 1807. This law stopped all trade between America and any other country. The goal was to get Britain and France, who were fighting each other at the time, to stop restricting American trade. The Act backfired, and the American people suffered. The Act was ended in 1809.

    James Madison was a Democratic-Republican who won the 1808 election against Federalist Charles Pinckney. He preveously had served 8 years as Secratary of State for Thomas Jefferson. This gave him a strong support with the Republican party.
  • Non-Intercourse Act

    The non intercourse act was on March 1st, 1809. It was during the wars of 1803 and 1815 between Great Britain and the French. They were capturing American ships to prevent each other from foreign trade. The Non-Intercourse Act said that basically America would stop all trade with Great Britain and French and the land they controlled if they did not respect America’s trading rights and stopped seizing ships.

    September 11,1812 , we declared war with Great Britain because they were raiding American ships. They were treating us like we couldn’t do anything, and that we were weak. The War o1812 proved to other countries that we are an independent state.

    James Monroe was elected as President on December 4, 1814. He was the president during the Era Of Good Feelings. He was the fifth president of the United States and signed the Monroe Doctrine which said that we would not get involved with any other European Wars, following Geoge Washington's statement in his farwell address.

    The Battle of New Orleans in 1814 was the last battle of the war of 1812.It was ironic, because we had already signed a peace treaty with Great Britain when the battle begun. Because of the slow communication, we didn’t get the message until after the massacre. The people of new Orleans and the army there had built walls and elevated places so that we could rain bullets down on the British. many lives were lost that day. and almost the entire British force was wiped out.

    The case of McCulloch v. Maryland happened on March 6, 1816.It dealt mainly with the dispirse between federal and state powers and rights.Maryland had not been for the National Bank of America and therefore started taxing every bank in the state that the state did not charactered by the state.

    The Missouri Compromise took place in 1819. it was a compromise where Maine would be separated from Massachusetts as a Free state and Missouri would be admitted as a slave state.And that there would be no more slave states above the 36°30′ north latitude line.

    The election of Andrew Jackson occured on December 3, 1828. He had served in the Continental Army at age 13 and was in military throughout his life before presidency. He ran once before and lost to John Quincy Adams, but then was asked to run again in 1825, 3 years before the next election. He won and this was known as the triumph of the common man.

    The Democratic Party was one of the two main parties in politics. The party consisted of what was known as the "Common Man". This consisted of people who were not very wealthy and just regular people who thought they deserved a place in politics no matter their social status or amount of money.

    The Indian Removal Act was signed by President Andrew Jackson on May 28, 1830. It was an act that made the Native Americans to move west of the Mississippi River. It was also called the Trail of Tears because thousands of people lost their lives.

    A court case on whether or not Georgia had the right to remove the Cherokee Indians from inside their borders. Georgia won and the Native Americans were forced to move West to what is now Oklahoma.
