  • Proclamation of neutrality

    Proclamation of neutrality
    In 1793 France and Great Britain were having a war. George Washington wanted nothing to do with either side so, on April 22nd 1793 he signed the Proclamation of Neutrality. This made it so that America did not pick either side to support in the war. This caused relations to fall with France because the U.S. had owed them money from the revolutionary war. The British were not happy they impressed the U.S. Navy and stole their ships. Picture source: Laura's AP American Blog
  • Alien and Sedation Acts

    In 1828 John Adams signed the Alien and Sedation Acts. This gave the government the ability to deport foreigners and imprison rebels and critics of the government. This could be used to sway elections. People criticized this law and it was banned in many states. http://www.ushistory.org/us/19e.asp

  • War with Tripoli

    The U.S. had many trade ships and paid Tripoli for protection from pirates on the sea. When the U.S. refused to pay for the services Tripoli declared war on May 14 1801. The U.S. won the war and since it was fought at sea the U.S. increased the size of its navy.
  • The Louisiana Purchase

    The Louisiana Purchase
    In 1803 France wanted to sell a large amount of land to America. President Thomas Jefferson accepted this offer because of how cheap the land was. This doubled the size of The country for a relatively low cost. Picture source: State Historical Study of North Dakota
  • The War of 1812

    When Britain Impressed the U.S. Navy the U.S. declared war In 1812 June 18. No one won the war but, the U.S. became more independent and Generals William Harrison and Andrew Jackson became future presidents.
  • The Monroe Doctrine

    In 1823 European countries were not happy with the new budding governments in their colonies, and threatened to stamp them out. James Monroe was not happy with this so, he signed the Monroe Doctrine which stated: If any of the Europeans attempted to disrupt any governments in the a Western Hemisphere they would take it as an attack on American safety. As a result Europe stayed away and America became the major power of the Western Hemisphere.
  • Tariff of Abominations

    In 1828 John Quincy Adams signed the tariff of abominations which made foreign goods more expensive. The north was having trouble with foreign factories, this helped them by having the foreign goods fall in demand while theirs rose. This crippled the south though with the raw materials selling for less and the goods they had to buy being more expensive.
  • The Indian Removal Act

    In 1830 Settlers were needing more and more land so they started to settle in Indian treaty land. The Indians were not happy with this. Andrew Jackson sided with the settlers and signed the Indian Removal Act. This pushed out the Indians and gave america more land for stuff.
