Pennsylvania Becomes a Colony
The king named the new colony to honor William Penn’s father, Pennsylvania.This colony was built because it was a good place for the Quakers and other religious groups to have religious freedom. This colony was very successful because they had peaceful relations with American Indian groups and had fertile farmland. -
The French and Indian War
The French and Indian War began because Britain felt that they had to prevent the French from gaining control over trade and territories. In the beginning, the French were winning. However, the British made a turning point because of William Pitt taking over wartime operations. Because of his great leadership, they were able to defeat the French. Still, they both had huge amounts of damage. -
The Sugar Act
A sugar act was the British thought to retrieve the money that they had lost in the seven years war by putting taxes. They put more taxes on sugar and decreased the taxes on molasses. Other than that, they also put taxes on wine. People were very angry with this action of the Parliament. -
The Currency Act
The value for the money in the colonies was going down, so the British prevented this by making pay more to them. They tried to make sure that they didn't lose money from the colonies when they paid for them.
The purpose of this was to prohibit new bills and reissuance for existing money. -
The Stamp Act
England wanted to pay their troops in the colonies, so they passed the Stamp Act. It put a tax on papers, documents, and other stuff. If the colonists didn’t pay, they were punished unfairly without a jury. The colonists hated this act. For them, it was an example of “taxation without representation. -
The Quartering Act
The quartering act was something that the Britain government required the Native Americans to let the British soldiers in their home and give food and also to sleep. The colonists also had to pay the tax for the provision and barracks during the quartering act too. Colonists resisted the law because they couldn’t believe the soldiers and it was a really disliked thing from the colonists. -
The Townshend Revenue Act
The Townshend act was proposed by a person called ‘Charles Townshend’. The British chancellor taxed goods such as glass, lead, paint paper, tea, dice, cards, etc that were imported to the colonies.They acted like this because of the money that they had lost from the war. However, colonists had reacted by boycotting British goods because of the dissatisfaction of the tax. -
The Boston Massacre
People from the colonists were angry with the taxation, so one guy called Edward Garrick protested and had a fight with one of the British Soldiers. The soldier hit Edward’s face with the musket. Colonists were angry with this so they threw snowballs and sharp ices to the custom official’s house. After that, the soldiers from Britain killed people by firing the guns. They also killed a 11 years old young kid which had shocked the people. -
The Boston Tea Party
It was a political protest from the Native Americans by throwing the tea from the ships to the ocean (which had cost about 100 million dollars in nowadays money). People in the colonies were angry because of Great Britain putting taxes on goods( including teas) without the representatives and doing whatever they wanted. -
The First Continental Congress
The First Continental Congress was a debate between 12 leaders of 13 colonies. It began in September 5,1774 and ended on October 26, 1774. It started because the colonies were really angry with the intolerable acts of Britain. During the congress, they decided to boycott British goods, unless they stop the acts that are unfair. -
The Second Continental Congress
After the first continental congress, they opened the second one. They made the congress because the British didn’t respond to their message and just put the law the same. During the congress ,they decided to make a continental army on June 14, 1774 and George Washington became the commander of the continental army. -
Patrick Henry’s “Give me Liberty or give me Death” speech
Patrick Henry had said in the Virginia conference. “Give me Liberty or give me Death.”This tells us how much the colony wanted freedom. The purpose of this speech was to move away from Britain by being in freedom and also to fight against them that they have the right of liberty. This speech encouraged the Virginal Colonists and also helped convince the Virginia troops to prepare for the war. -
The Ride of Paul Revere
It was ridden by the horse which they passed Medford, Lexington and Concord to warn the patriots.It was also a race to Concord. George Washington named Commander in Chief
George Washington was selected as a chief of the continental army during the continental congress. He was a really good chief and had great leadership. Therefore, the colonists were able to earn victory from the war between the British. Later George Washington also became the first American president.
