The second great awakening was when religious revivals would be held throughout the us. There were many more people going to church and the revivalists didn’t like slavery so the south didn’t like them. -
Creation of the cotton gin
Eli Whitney created the cotton gin for quicker and faster cotton production this caused more slaves to have to pick cotton faster to keep up with production of the cotton gin -
Louisiana purchase
Thomas Jefferson bought parts of land from France. This was considering issue because in the constitution it said he can’t technically use tax money but he did. -
Missouri compromise
There was a line in the us to separate free states from slave states. The problem was when Missouri applied to be a state the sides would be un even so Maine was created the make the two sides balanced. -

The Industrial Revolution started in the North and created many job opportunities. This started mostly in the North and spread more west and led to child labor. It also required more slaves to pick materials the make things with. -

Nat turner’s rebellion
A slave named nat turner led one of the largest slave rebellions, killing many plantation owners and others. This showed that the slaves are bad people and should not be lat out of slavery. -

It was a conflict between s.c. And Andrew Jackson about paying a high tarriff. This led to Jackson sending troops to s.c. threatening to kill them. -
California gold rush
After the u.s. got California from Mexico people found gold there and people went in search of it. The amount of people that migrated there made it eligible to be a state but made the south mad because it had no slavery. -
Compromise of 1850
It allowed California to be a free state, and allowed new states to choose on slavery. It was unable to please both groups. This resulted in more slave laws to be added like the fugitive slave act. -
Frederick Douglass gives July 4th speech
Frederick Douglass Gave his speech about how black people aren’t free. He used his public speeches to influence abolition. He gave a speech about 4th of July and that it doesn't mean any thing to black people. -
Bleeding Kansas
This was a day where everyone voted for if they wanted Kansas to be a free or slave state. The problem was that people were coming from different places outside of Kansas to vote and people from Kansas disliked that. This cause a lot of fighting an violence between the two sides. -
Kansas-Nebraska act
This was an act that made new states have slavery. The mason Dixon line made all states south of the line allow slavery. It caused conflict with c.a. -
Attack on Charles Sumner
A pro slavery senator (Preston Brooks) used a cane to attack a Free Senator. This Impacted the ties between the North and the South because the free senators disliked the slave senators even more. -

A slave that escaped went to a free state and was still captured and brought back into slavery. This created more tension between the North and the South because the court rules he wasn’t a citizen because he was of African descent so North people thought the ruling was very unfair. -

John Brown (anti slavery abolitionist) attempted to raid a ferry with military weapons on board. This created more tension between the North and the South because it showed anti slave people are awful people and were wrong in their decisions about slavery. -

Abraham Lincoln (republican) was elected for president and he was anti-slavery. This created more tension between the North and the South because it shows more people wanted to abolish slavery and brought questions on if the south should go into succession. -

South declared they were their own country and broke off the US. This created more tension between the North and the South because showed the south did not like the north and the north wanted the land back from the Confederate states. -
Shots Fired At Fort Sumter
This was the official start of fighting in America Civil War. Union troops stationed at Fort Sumter in South Carolina were attacked by South Carolina militia. Union troopers lost and surrendered to the Confederate militia. The war went on for another 4 years after this. -
Harriet Beecher Stow wrote “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”
This was a book that was written to show how horrible and brutal slavery was. This showed non-slave owners and slave owners how horrible and wrong slavery was. The book was written from a sad point of view to show how brutal slavery really was. -
