  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    The missori compromise was a law that admitted Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state. Also it made slavery past the southern boader line of Missouri illegal. The effect on the Civil War was that it flared up tensions between the two regions.
  • Willmot Proviso

    Willmot Proviso
    This was a bill created by David Willmot that was proposed to outlaw slavery in any territorys won from the war with Mexico meaning that they would be free states. The act never passed but led to the fromation of the free soil party a political abolisionist group. This led to the civil war by increassing sectional tensions and splitting congress along reginal lines.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
    The compromise admitted California as a free state in the Union and it abolished the slave trade in Washington D.C. To please the south they would not pass laws regarding the rest of the territories won from Mexico and they passed the Fugitive Slave Act wjich was an act to capture runaway slaves and return them to there owners.
    This led to the Civil War because the fugitive slave act angered the North.

    This was a book written by Harriet Beacher Stowe.that showed the evils of slavery. This was a very provacative peace of literature during this time period This led to the civil war by raising sectional tensions between North and South because of diffrent points of view.

    This was an act that organized the Nebraska Territory into two states, Kansas and Nebraska. The issue of slavery would be resolved though popular sovernity in which the people vote on an issue. This led to many conflicts between the two groups of settlers The effects were that it brought upon Bleeding Kansas a brutal conflict between Northern and Southern settlers.

    The Sack of Lawerence occured when a proslavery mob attacked the town of Lawerence Kansas(the states North capital) to try to drive the North away. This led to war by angering the North and promting attacks in retalliation

    This event occured when Dredd Scott a slave that had lived in free states for a time sued for freedom on the grounds of him once living in free territories. The courts verdict was that Scott was not a U.S. citizen so he couldnt sue and Roger Taney argued that slaves were property and under the Fifth amendment Congress can not take away property This event led to the Civil War by saying that slaves were property which the South agreed with but the North thought was abomidable

    The election of 1860 was to be a conterversal one, because of Lincoln. Many Southerners thought that he would abolish slavery. His name did not even appear on there ballet. Lincoln won but for many Southerners it was the last straw. This helped cause the Civil War because many Southern states threatend to secede from the Union because of Lincoln's election

    This event occured when South Carolina secceded from the Union. They did this because they had a strong view on slavery and they were afraid that President Lincoln would abolish slavery This led to the Civil War because it set an example for the other states that wanted to seccede and showed that this would only be resolved through conflict
