Pre-Civil War Events

  • Missouri Compromise of 1820

    Made slavery illegal above the latitude line of 36 degrees.
  • Tariff of 1828

    Raised prices on foriegn materials so that other countries did not buy Southern cotton and the South lost money.
  • Nat Turner's Rebellion

    Led a rebellion in Virginia with about sixty other slaves in an attempt to lead the slaves to freedom. This rebellion resulted in the death of about fifty five white men. He and his men were eventually killed for their part in the rebellion.
  • The Tariff of 1832

    this tariff was meant to please the south after the tariff of 1828. This tariff protected local producers like the south from other foreign products so that they could make more money.
  • Compromise of 1850

    This compromis admitted California as a free state and would allow the citizens of the territories of New Mexico, Nevada, Ariazona, and Utah to decide whethr they want to be a free or slave state.
  • Harriet Beecher Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Stowe published this book in response to the fugitive slave act. She was an abolitionist and she hated the fact that runaway slaves had to be returned to their masters, so she publishe her book.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    This act stated that the people living in the states of Kansas and Nebraska could decide for themselves whether they wanted to be a slave state or a free state. This act also repealed the Missouri Compromise so that Kansas and Nebraska could be a slave state if they wanted to be.
  • "Bleeding Kansas"

    Bleeding Kansas was caused the settlers of Kansas were unsure about whether they wanted to be a slave state or a free state. This disagreement led to violence among settlers.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    The Dred Scott decision was made because a slave named Dred Scott had sued Congress because they would not grant him his freedom even though he was living in a free territory. Congress denied his request because he was still owned by hi master and he was not a citizen so therefore, he could not sue.
  • Lincoln-Douglas Debates

    Debates ofver the issue of slavery between Abraham Licoln and Stephen Douglas. These debates mad Lincoln into an imprtant political figure.
  • John Brown's Raid

    Brown and about twenty other men raided the federal arsenal in the town of Harpers Ferry, Virginia in hopes to arm slaves in that area to get them to rebel against their masters.
  • Abraham Lincoln Elected President

    President Lincoln still won the election even though his name was not on the ballots in the deep south.
  • Shots Fired at Fort Sumter

    These first shots were the very first shots of the Civil War.
