    The Missouri Compromise
    The Congress admitted Missouri to the Union as a slave state and divided the res of Louisiana Purchase into free and slave territory.

    Fugitive Slave Act
    The Southern people wanted slave, but the Northern did not want slaves. The North objected to the lack of trial given by commissioners.
  • The Compromise of 1850

    The Compromise of 1850
    The Clay Compormise was a set of five compromises.
    1) California to be a free state
    2) New Mexico to be organized as a federal terrritory
    3) Texas to give up their claim
    4) Ending slave trade
    5) Southern slaveholders (This was more effective for the fugitive slave law)

    Uncle Tom's Cabin
    This was a book that helped the readers see what the slaves really go through on the plantations. The South did not like this book because they said the things in it were not true and the slaves were not treated like the book said.
  • Nebraska- Kansas Act

    Nebraska- Kansas Act
    A law that divided Louisiana into two parts- Kansas and Nebraska- and built a railroad to the West Coast.
  • The Effect on Kansas

    The Effect on Kansas
    Kansas then divided into anti- slavery and pro- slavery. This resulted in "Bleeding Kansas" which was a series of violent political confrontations about the slavery.

    The Congress added a republican party. This was to have both pro- and anti- slavery in the house.
  • The Dred Scott Decision

    The Dred Scott Decision
    The Dred Scott Decision was a free African- American wanted to sue a white. The house then had to decide if he coule. The house ruled that Aftricans were not citizens, therefore did not have the right to sue. Scott was not a free citizen, and the Missouri Compromise on slavery to be unconstitutional.
  • Harper's Ferry

    Harper's Ferry
    John Brown wanted to help more slaves into the North, so he raided Harper's ferry. None of the slaves joined him and the whites attacked him and killed 11 men- Brown was captured.
  • Secession

    Secession
    Abraham Lincoln was elected presient in 1860. After this, South Carolina was the first state to take act of formally withdrawing from the Union.
  • New Nation

    New Nation
    The new nation was made up of the states of Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas. It was names the Conferderate States of America. Their first preident was Jefferson Davis, and thier first capital was Mongomery, Alabama.
