    Byzantine Empire (Europe)

    The Byzantine Empire originated as the eastern of of the classical Roman Empire, and lasted until 1453 when it fell to the Ottoman Turks.
    -Because of the Byzantine commonwealth, the legacy of Byzantium survives and continues to shape the lives of millions in Russia and eastern Europe.
    -Byzantine Christianity developed along distinctive lines, and it became a faith different from the early Christianity of the Roman empire.

    The Sui Dynasty (East Asia)

    The Sui dynast lasted from 589 to 618 C.E.
    -The emperors placed large demands on their subjects in the course of building a strong, centralized government.
    -Built the Grand Canal, facilitating trade between northern and southern China.

    Harsha's Kingdom (South Asia)

    606-648 C.E.
    -Ruled by King Harsha, temporarily restored unified rul in northern India and sought to revive imperial authority.
    -Harsha was a Buddhist, but he was very accepting of other faiths.
    -Harsha spent much of his reign on horseback traveling through his realm to solidify alliances with local rulers.

    -Tang rulers organized China into a powerful, productive, and prosperous society.
    -Relied on Bureaucracy of Merit- meant that most officeholders one their posts because of ability.

    The Umayyad Dynasty (Middle East)

    The Umayyad dynasty lasted from 661 to 750 C.E.
    -Established capital at Damascus, despite their association with Mecca.
    -Appointed members of the elite class as governors of conquered lands, and distributed wealth that they extracted among the priviliged class.

    Greenland Colony (Mesoamerica)

    About 800-1500 C.E.
    -Disappeared after a cooling global climate made it difficult to grow crops there.
    -Established by the Vikings, demonstrates their ability to travel safely over large stretches of open ocean.

    The Song Dynasty (Southeast Asia)

    960-1279 C.E.
    -First emperor was Song Taizu, who started the policy of focusing on industry, education, and the arts rather than military affairs.
    -Even though it survived for three centuries, it never really built a powerful state.
