    Puritan and Colonial

    Puritan and colonial were during the same time period. The puritans and the other immigrants were colonizing America during this time. For these people, the specific types of poetry that they indulged themselves in were such genres as traditional lyrical poetry, narrative poetry and sermons amongst others. These genres were all based on life.

    Revolutionary and the Age of Reason

    The poetry during this time period ranged from a ballad to traditional poetry. All of these genres were mostly based on reality, which most of the time was based on the revolutionary war.

    Romanticism

    During this time period people would write pieces of poetry that tried to express a certain physical and emotional passion or appreciation for the natural world. They were also used to cultivate individualism in people.

    American Renaissance and Transcendentalism

    This was a particularly philosophical movement that was used to protest against the state of the culture and society in the United States. One main belief of the transcendentalists was that man and nature are both inherently “good.”

    Realism

    The poetry during this time period was specifically used to relay the reality of everyday life. This was not only achieved by poetry, but also in art and literature as well.

    Modern

    Most of the modern poetry was expressed lyrically which was one create wat to show the vivid imagination and emotions of the poet. It was also used to show the culture of the poet as well.

    Harlem Renaissance

    This time period was mainly known for the amount of black authors that were showing their work in the literature world. The work being produced expressed large amounts of racial pride.

    Post-Modernism

    In this era, people started to delve deeper into new ideas that didn’t necessarily have an resemblance to anything that had been seen before. It was also thought to be the opposite of the Enlightenment. People were against it. However, because people had new ideas about culture and religion there became new genres that, previously, were nonexistent.

    Contemporary

    Now in the last movement, people started to experiment with formats. Poets would write rhymeless works that flowed just right. They also tried to write their works in a way that resembles the common language spoken in their community and create beautiful images out of their words. And lastly, they would suggest new ideas in their writing to strike thought into their readers.
