  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    Under the Missouri Compromise, Missouri would join the union as a slave state and Maine would join as a free state. This kept the balance between slave and free states and stopped the expansion of slavery. It also helped delay​ the Civil War.
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    Fugitive Slave Act
    The Fugitive Slave Act made it a crime to help runaway slaves and allowed officials to arrest those slaves in free areas. This upset Northerners and caused a deeper divide between the North and South.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Uncle Tom's Cabin
    Uncle Tom's Cabin informed people about the evils of slavery and spoke out powerfully against it. It caused anger in the South and birthed new abolitionists in the North. It was so important that President Lincoln said that the author of the novel, Harriet Beecher Stowe, was "the little lady who made this big war."
  • Pierce Elected

    Pierce Elected
    President Pierce promised to honor the Compromise of 1850 and the Fugitive Slave Act. He saw the abolition of slavery as something that would tear apart the nation and his policies may have pushed the U.S closer the Civil War.
