Students will learn how to use chrome books. They will become familiar with using search engines and logging in to the chrome books.

Students are posed a question: What if we didn't know anything about the past? How could this effect the future? Chart paper- brain storm answers. Teacher poses guiding question: How can we, as citizens of the U.S. and our community, share with the world the ways that African Americans have shaped our past, present and future? Students write to reflect on guiding question and entry event.

Students will participate in a class building and team building exercise. They will then write to reflect on the importance of working as a team in groups and as a class community

Students will be asked to consider what information is important to know when researching the contributions of someone from the past. Students will brain storm a list of questions they would like to answer about an important African American in history.

Students will become familiar with the note takeing format that will be used for the research portion of the project. Students will practice using the note taking outline and show how they can condense information and use their own words.

Students will be given different sources of information about various influential African Americans from history including printed articles, books, magazines and online sources. They will have time to read and learn about some different people they may find interesting. On this day students will select a list of three historical figure they would like to research based on what they read. Students will submit this list and be grouped into pairs based on their choices.

Students will get together with thier partner and share the list of research questions they compiled which they think are important to address when researching a person in history and their contributions. They will being to answer the questions they have compiled through sustained research online and in texts.

Students continue to compile information addressing their research questions.

Students will complete a charrette in which they share the notes they have taken with a student from another team in order to gain feedback on their notes. Students will submit notes and feedback from the charrette to the teacher on this day.

Students will apply feedback from teacher and other students to fine tune their notes and complete their research on the influential person they chose.

Students will participate in a guided tour of the George Washington Carver Museum and Culture Center where they will learn about Black history and how influential African Americans have shaped our local community as well as our nation.

Students will share their research with the class in the form of an oral presentation which will be accompanied by a photograph of the person they researched. Students will write to reflect on one or two of the important contributions they learned about from the other students and how those contributions have shaped our nation today.

Students will learn how to use timetoast.com to collaborate and create a timeline. Our technology guru may be called in to teach students how to log on to the website and how to add events to the timeline.

Students will compile information from their research to timetoast.com.

Students will continue to add their information to the timeline. Students will write to make predictions about what the timeline will reveal.

Students will review the timeline in its' entirety as a whole class. Whole class discussion will occur to talk about the series of events and how they flow into each other. Students will write one final event they think should be added to the timeline that will occur in the future. Teacher will later add these written responses to the timetoast and publish the timeline.
