Parliament Acts

By Macayla
  • Proclamation of 1763

The Proclamation of 1763 was meant to curb any tension between the colonies and the Native Americans, putting restrictions on colonial expansion.
This upset the colonists because they believed they had a right to the land that they fought the french for.
  • Sugar Act

The sugar act reduced taxes on molasses and put more taxes on imported goods such as sugar, coffee and cambric.
This upset the colonist because it messed up the revenue earned in the colony because it reduced the trade that they received.
  • Currency Acts

Put in place by parliament which prohibited the printing of new money and reissued the current currency system.
This was upsetting since it gave the British control of the colonies currency and restricted economic growth of the colonies and led the protests in Massachusetts
  • Stamp Act

The Stamp act placed a tax on paper items such as newspapers, documents and playing cards.
This upset the colonists as the taxation was done by parliament instead of colonial legislation, meaning they had no say in the taxation where they boycotted.
  • Quartering Act

The Quartering Act required colonists to house and feed british troops who were stationed in the colonies. This caused upset for the colonists because they had to pay and care for the troops despite many thinking that troops in a time of peace were unnecessary so they refused to do it.
  • Declaratory Act

The Declaratory Act gave parliament the power to pass laws over the colonies.
It came a day after the repeal of the stamp act but it only caused colonists to fear the loss of their independence as it gave parliament the right to pass any law they saw fit without consulting the colonists.
  • The Townsend Act

It required the colonists to pay a tax on imported tea, glass, oil, lead, paper and paint.
Colonists once again showed controversy towards an act that taxed without representation for them leading to public protests because of the belief of the taking away of their freedom.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
British Troops opened fire on a group of men and boys after they through ice and snow at them. Five colonist end up dead from the attack leading to a split on if the troops were in the right or not.
This lead to more opposition towards British goods, leading to the repeal of 3 of the 4 Townsend acts.
  • Tea Act

    Tea Act
Parliament allowed East Indian Company to monopolize in the tea trade to avoid bankruptcy as well as bypass tea merchants in the colonies. Tea that was being smuggled into the colonies became unprofitable and threatened the tea merchants in the colonies.
This led to opposition and protests from the colonists, making tea ships station away from colony ports
  • Boston Tea Party

    Boston Tea Party
Oppositions from the colonists lead to tea ships stationing away from colonial ports, but in Boston a tea ship landed in the ports to drop off cargo. Men dressed as Mohawk Native Americans boarded the ships and dumped the tea in the ocean.
Parliament demanded legal action taken out as it was seen as vandalism.
  • First Intolerable Act

    First Intolerable Act
The first Intolerable Act closed off Boston harbor, stopping all shipping which threatened economic downfall for Boston until the tea lost in the Tea party was paid back.
This made colonists want to unite together as they saw the closing of the Boston Port as a threat to all the colonies and Britains ability to take over their life.
  • Quebec Act

    Quebec Act
Extended Quebec to the Ohio River and followed previous French practices which were frowned upon such as no representatives, no juries and gave the Catholics Status.
This caused upset in the colonies in both the protestants for the Catholic Church status along with others because of the land rights Ohio going mainly to Quebec that was their own.
