Origins of American Tradition to Slavery and Civil War

  • John Smith founds Jamestown in modern day Virginia

    The pilgrims voyage to America in an attempt to escape the religious persecution from the Anglican church in England. They end up landing outside of their charter and draft the Mayflower Compact which establishes Jamestown, the first lasting colony in the New World.

    Indentured servitude revolt that proved the unreliability of indentured servants and brought about a significant increase in the slave trade in America.
  • First Great Awakening

    Religious reform in America where passionate speakers like George Whitefield and Edwards changed the landscape of religion in America and helped laid the foundations for some of the ideas that would push for American independence.
  • Treaty of Paris is Signed

    After the American Revolution, diplomats sign the Treaty of Paris that grants the United States of America her official freedom from the British.
  • George Washington becomes the first US President

    George Washington is unanimously elected as the first president setting several precedents to come including the two term precedent that is now a Constitutional amendment. However, the only reason that this was allowed was because the Constitution created the executive branch which was not in the Articles of Confederation before it.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    France is at war and is in desperate need of funds, so President Thomas Jefferson offers to buy the Louisiana territory from Napoleon for fifteen million dollars and it works.
  • War of 1812 Ends

    The War of 1812 begins in 1812 and is a grueling war for the newly formed America. The British invade in an effort to retake their lost colonies from the American Revolution. The war starts off rough for the Americans, but eventually they pick it up and end up winning. This war solidifies America as a new world power and it now receives recognition from Europe as a country.
  • Andrew Jackson Becomes President

    When Jackson becomes President he allows for a new era in politics and democracy in the United States, there are far less restrictions on voting, and he was able to include the new immigrants because of events like the Irish Potato famine.
  • The Communist Manifesto

    Karl Marx publishes the Communist Manifesto and socialism and communism begin to spread around the world.
  • Southern Secession

    South Carolina secedes from the Union and not long after many of the other southern states follow, initiating the Civil War in America.
  • Slavery Ends

    After the Civil War in 1865, congress ratifies the 13th Amendment. Legally marking the end of Slavery in the United States of America forever.
