Nullification Crisis

  • Tariff of 1828 (The Tariff of Abominations)

    This tariff was passed in the John Quincy Adams presidency. The tariff purpose was to protect northern and western agricultural products from foreign competition. The problem with this tariff was that southerners would be upset by this tariff as it would increase their region's cost of living. On top of that, it would cut into the profits of New England's industrialists.
  • John C. Calhoun Writes South Carolina Exposition and Protest

    John C. Calhoun was the vice President for both John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson. Calhoun would also be the first Vice President to resign after he is made senator of South Carolina. With South Carolina Exposition and Protest Calhoun would write to protest the Tariff of 1828. In this piece, Calhoun would express his belief that the states have the right to nullify federal laws a similar idea to the Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions.
  • Webster-Hayne Debate

    This was a debate between Webster and Hayne about states' rights. Webster would say that the state doesn't have the right to overrule the nation. While Hayne believes it is in South Carolina's right to nullify federal laws they say are unconstitutional.
  • Tariff of 1832

    This was a revision of the Tariff of Abominations. This would lower the tariff. This solution would not be enough for southern as they still saw the increase in prices of the Southern goods as unconstitutional. This would later lead to the nullification crisis.
  • South Carolina Ordinance of Nullification

    South Carolina would see both the Tariff of 1828 and 1832 as unconstitutional as they would enact the South Carolina ordinance of nullification. This would make it so the state was able to nullify both tariffs and would threaten to leave the nation. They would say that if they are threatened with any military intervention then South Carolina and its citizen would defend themselves and make their own government. It would not take long until Jackson would send the navy in response to the threat.
  • Jackson Proclamation to the People of South Carolina.

    Jackson gives a warning to the people of South Carolina. He says how the government has put them in great danger.
  • Clay's Tariff Bill

    Senator Henry Clay, Jackson's political rival, would come up with a comprise. He would make the Tariff of 1833. This tariff would make it so add value that the tariff adds is eventually reduced to a more moderate level.
  • Force Act

    This will allow Jackson to enforce federal law by using the Military.
