In the early 1400`s people in Europe began to look to the seas and beyond. Others wanted to spread Christianity far and wide. Most of all, people wanted to find riches. The Age Of Exploration and descovery had begun.

I the years following Columbus`s voyages a great interaction between the "New World" and "Old world" took place. This interaction was reffered to as the Columbian Exchange.

He led his first expedition westward. He landed in the Bahamas,he beleived that he was near Asia.

One European with such ideas was John Cabot, an Italian living in England. In 1497 King Henry VII sent Cabot on a voyage to the west. The English thought thier would be a water route that would lead north and west to Asia.

A portugese explorer Vasco de Gama found such a route and sailed to India.

He thought that Asia could be reached by sailing west from Europe. He persuaded King Ferdinand and Isabella to support an expedition ,or trip of exploration.Columbus gave the king and queen the credit for this idea.

In 1948 he reached South America. Later, a mapmaker labeled this new continent "America" for another explorer,Amerigo Vespucci.The name stuck.
