Nelson was elected the National Secretary of the African National Congress Youth League, which is the youth wing of the African National Congress.

Violates Suppression of Communism Act

Dec 25, 1953

This is where the Defiance Campaign began and where he began to speak up about inequality. He was sentenced to 9 months imprisonment with hard labour. After this he opened up South Africa’s first black law firm.

Sentenced To Prison

Nov 7, 1962

Nelson was entenced to 5 years imprisonment for leaving the country without a passport. The government were looking for any reason for why they could put him behind bars.

Rivonia Trial

Oct 7, 1963

Nelson Mandela appeared in court for the first time in the Rivonia trial, in which the Apartheid Government accused some members of the ANC of conspiracy to overthrow them. After the trial they were sent to to jail for more than two decades.
