    Or "New Deal" for Native American, provided for tribal landownership, self-government, control of Indian education, and the closing of many of the remaining federal off-reservation boarding schools. It's major goal was to reverse cultural assimilation of Native Americans of the civilization era of education. It also facilitated the building of 100 community day schools on tribal lands and hired ethnographers to create school lessons in tribal languages.

    "Granted" Native Americans in the United States a new degree of autonomy, giving them greater control over their lands and allowing them to form legally recognized tribal governments. The act also tried to stop the loss of Indian lands, encouraged Native American tribes to establish local self-government, and encouraged the preservation of native crafts and traditions.
  • The Indian Self Determination Act was passed

    The Indian Self-Determination and Education Act of 1975 allowed Native Americans to operate their own schools. Also known as the Indian Bill of Rights, enabled Native Americans to bring their own languages, beliefs, and philosophies to their schools. Since the act was passed, more than seventy schools have taken charge of their own operations.
