Matt Murphy's Technology Timeline

32 Years on this Technological Rock Called Earth

The awkward moment when you realize Facebook didn't exist when your elementary school students were born!
  • First time using a computer

    First time using a computer
In 1st grade, I used a computer for the very first time. At this point, it was IBM computers that loaded programs from 3.5" floppy disk which were also needed to save documents. At this point, there was no mouse or graphical interface (e.g. Windows).

Oregon Trail - where dysentary was the devil
The game Oregon Trail was an important part of my 6th grade education. Loaded from a floppy disk on an Apple II computer, the goal was to get to Oregon without losing all your oxen or your mother. Good luck.
  • Inherited my first PC - Gateway 2000

Inherited my first PC - Gateway 2000
Inherited a used computer from a close friend. The Gateway 2000. It was powered by an Intel i486 processor with a top processing speed of 88mHz and 4mb of RAM. It ran Windows 3.1 originally and eventually (slowly) ran Windows 95.
  • Napster!

    Napster!
I became aware of Napster and my life was completely changed forever. The difficult part about Napster at this time, however, was the internet connection speeds. Using a dial-up connection which peaked at 56kps, you often would have to setup a list of downloads and let it work overnight.

My first cell phone: The Nokia brick!
When cell phones first came out, nearly everyone had a Nokia brick phone. They were indesctructable and I probably still have one that works today. I could drive over it and it would still work. Seriously.

    Facebook comes to Marshall University
Approximately 2005, Facebook came to Marshall. This was when you were still required to have a University e-mail address to sign up!
  • First iPhone

    First iPhone
I bought my first iPhone in 2012, the iPhone 4s. I was a little late coming to the iPhone craze but this absolutely revolutionized the way I live my life and it really has been doing so ever since. My iPhone (now a 6 plus) is my alarm clock, my camera, my main mode of communicating, my only phone, my health tracker, and on and on. The iPhone was an absolute game changer in the mobile phone market and most certainly a game changer in individuals' lives as well.
  • Purchased my first Apple computer, the MacBook Pro

Purchased my first Apple computer, the MacBook Pro
Up to this point in my life, I had used predominantly Windows-based computers. However, in 2013 I made the leap to Mac and I am very thrilled with the overall quality and ease-of-use that it provides. I consider myself "tri-lingual" in terms of using computer operating systems as I am familiar and comfortable with using Mac OS, Windows OS, and Linux based OS as well.
  • Purchased my first Apple iPad

    Purchased my first Apple iPad
In 2013, I bought my first iPad, the iPad mini 2. This revolutionized the way I would approach school as it provided a lightweight option for quick research as well as using e-textbooks. I no longer purchase paper books as I exclusively use my iPad for the Kindle e-reader and iBooks applications.
