Maine becomes a free state and Missouri becomes a slave state. Split the Louisiana Purchase along 36 30 with the north being free and south being slave. Caused more of a division in the country, which helped led to the Civil War. -

Dred Scott
Scott sued for his freedom claiming he was free since he lived in free territory before returning to missouri. The court ruled he could not sue because he was property. When people saw this it further increased a high tension and caused more of a rift of the nation. -
Ottawa debate
There were about 12,000 people at the Ottawa debate. Douglas discussed the Kansas-Nebraska act. Lincoln talked about nationalizing slavery. Lincoln had won the debate. It was significant because the south and north did not not agree with some of the debate ideas. Brought the issue of slavery to the nation. -
Freeport debate
There was about 20,000 people present. Douglas talks about the idea that any sate had to exclude all slavery before becoming a state. Lincoln talked about not liking slavery. Lincoln won. It helped cause the war because some did not want slavery. Brought the issue of slavery to the nation. -
John Brown
Brown led a group of men to capture federal arsenal at harpers ferry Virginia. He thought an army of slaves would rise up in rebellion with him. He was sentenced to hang. This angered the north when john brown was hung. -
Davis's decision
Davis decided to attack the fort at 4:30 am. Two days later the fort surrended to the confederates. This was the beginning of the war.
