    New England authorities believed congregations and churchgoers needed to be educated in music. This led to a formal system for music education
  • William Channing Woodbridge

    Although not a musician, he understood the importance of music education and was a huge advocate for it
  • Music Becomes Curricular Subject in Boston

    Lowell Mason taught music at the Hawes School for one year with no salary
  • Normal Music Course

    Written in an attempt to legitimize and help standardize music education. Music was seen as just entertainment before this.
