  • Proclamation of Neutrality

    Issued by President George Washington. It is a statment that America is neutral in all affairs between France and Great Britain. They wanted to stay out of all of the troubles.

  • XYZ Affairs

    French try to bribe the American diplomats before negotiating over problems that could result in war. Americans were very insulted.

  • Convention of 1800

    Treaty between the United States and France that ended all hostilities.

  • Louisiana Purchase

    President Thomas Jefferson purchases 828,000 square miles of Territory (called the Louisiana Territory) from France.

  • Embargo Act

    Jefferson attempts to avoid international problems by stopping US trade with other nations.

  • War of 1812

    The British policy of impressment caused a war to break out between the US and Great Britain.

  • Treaty of Ghent

    Ended the war of 1812.

  • Monroe Doctrine

    President Monroe makes the announcment "Hands off the western hemisphere"
