    The Proclamation of Neutrality was issued by President George Washington declaring that US would remain neutral in the conflict between France and Great Britain.

    XYZ Affair
    Two American diplomats went to meet with French officials, and a French foreign minister sent 3 agents(called X, Y, Z by the Americans) to demand money from Americans before the French officials would agree to meet the American diplomats. The US saw this as bribery.
  • Convention of 1800

    The Convention of 1800 occured to try restore peace between the US and France after Quasi War and XYZ Affair, which peace was restored.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    President Thomas Jefferson purchased the Louisiana territory from the Napoleon of France that included all or part of 18 current states and two Canadian provinces.
  • Embargo Act

    Embargo Act
    The Embargo Act was asked by Pressident Jefferson to Congress to pass an act that made all exports illegal; it ended up being a disaster for the US and it also created an economic hardship for the US.
  • War of 1812

    War of 1812
    The War of 1812 occurred because British ship were taking American sailors of of their ships and forcing them into the British navy service, this was known as Impressment. The war lasted until 1814. The war took place in the US and it unfortunately led to the White House being burned down to the ground.

    The Treaty of Ghent was signed in 1814 . It gave no gains to either side. It was called the "Second War of Independence".
