    National College for the Deaf and Dumb
    The National College for the Deaf and Dumb was authorized by President Abraham Lincoln by signing the Enabling Act. This college is the only recognized school for the deaf to offer college degrees in the United States. In 1986, the Education of the Deaf Act awarded Gallaudet university status.
  • American Association of Mental Retardation

    American Association of Mental Retardation
    American Association of Mental Retardation was established. It is the oldest and largest association dealing with mental retardation. The AAMR has defined the definition of mental retardation, which is used to determine who can and cannot access publicly funded services and support.
  • Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    Elementary and Secondary Education Act
    Elementary and Secondary Education Act supports many initiatives that help low income families access high quality education programs. The act includes provisions for free and reduced lunches and additional teachers in disadvantaged communities. The ESEA applies to children who need additional support to benefit from public school education programs.

    Vocational Rehabilitation Act
    Vocational Rehabilitation Act is there in help to define the handicapped person. It is also the act that defines appropriate education giving knowledge to those who need more information on the education deserved by those students who need it. It prohibits discrimination against students with disabilities in federally funded programs.

    Educational Amendments Act
    The Educational Amendments Act grants federal funds to states for programming for exceptional learners. Providing the first federal funding of state programs for students who are gifted and talented. The act also grants those students and families the right of due process in special education placement.
  • Education for All Handicapped Children Act

    Education for All Handicapped Children Act
    The Education for All Handicapped Children Act was enacted by the United States Congress in 1975.Required all public schools accept federal funds to provide equal access to education and one free meal a day for children with physical and mental disabilities. Public schools were required to evaluate children with disabilities and create an educational plan with parent. Required school districts provide administrative procedures so that parents of disabled children dispute decisions.

    IDEA
    The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act is a created within 4 parts of American legislation that ensures students with a disability that they are provided with FAPE, fixed to their individual needs. Goal of IDEA overall is to provide children with disabilities the same opportunity for education as those students who do not have a disability. It is composed of covers the general provisions of the law, covers infants and toddlers with disabilities, etc.

    Americans with disabilities act
    ADA, a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life are open to the general public. The purpose of ADA is to make sure that people with disabilities have the same rights & opportunities as everyone. The ADA gives civil rights protections to individuals with disabilities similar to those provided to individuals on the basis of race, color, sex, there to guarantee equal opportunity in public accommodations.
  • Individuals Disabilities Education Improvement Act

    Individuals Disabilities Education Improvement Act
    Allows states to extend use of the developmental delay category for students through 9 & allows special education staff who are working in classrooms to assist general education students when needed. Requires multiple things such as a general education teacher to be a member of the IEP team & students with disabilities to take part in statewide & districtwide assessments. Proactive behavior management plan to be included in the student’s IEP if student has behavior problems.
  • No Child Left Behind Act

    No Child Left Behind Act
    NCLBA authorizes several federal education programs that are administered by the states. It is there to ensure those students who are disadvantaged, achieve academic proficiency. It allows school districts flexibility in how they use federal education funds to improve student achievement. It emphasizes educational programs that have been proven effective and increases the choices available to the parents of students attending Title I schools.
