    The Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
    The Archduke of Austria, Franz Ferdinand and his wife are assassinated by a member of the Serbian Terrorist group, The Black Hand. The significance of this event sparked the outbreak of World War I.
  • Austria Declares War on Serbia

    Angry over the assassination of the Archduke, Austria declares war on Serbia.The assassination was the leading cause to the start of the war.
  • Germany Declares War on Russia

    Germany, an ally with Austria declares war on Russia, an ally with Serbia. When Russia mobilized against Austria, Germany declared war. This event has been known as the month that changed the world.
  • Germany Declares War on France

    France was allied with Russia. German troops entered Belgium. British Foreign Secretary, Sir Edward Grey, gave Germany an ultimatum; withdraw from Belgium or face British forces.
  • Great Britain Declares War on Germany

    When Germany did not withdraw from Belgium, Britain declared war.
  • Japan Declares War on Germany

    Japan was allied with Great Britain so they declared war on Germany. An ultimatum went unanswered which lead to war.
  • The Battle of Tannenberg

    Destruction of the Second Russian Army in East Prussia by the Germans. The Russian Trains were unable to reach the troops and the Germans were able to surround the Russians. 125,000 Russians were taken Prisoner and thousands died.This battle was one of the first battles of World War I. This battles significance was that the Germans out battled and defeated armies larger than them who were more trained and equipped.
  • Turkey Joins the Central Powers

    Turkey joins the Central Powers; Austria-Hungary, Germany, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire. The Allied powers were Russia, France, The United Kingdom, Belgium, and the United States.
  • The RMS Lusitania Sinks

    The RMS Lusitania Sinks
    The British passenger ship, the RMS Lusitania is sunk by German U-boats. The ship was carrying many American passengers and it's sinking sparked outrage in the U.S.
  • Italy Joins the Allied Powers

  • The Battle of Verdun

    The battle of Verdun was a 9 month battle between the Germans and the French. The Germans lost 430,000 men and the French lost 540,000.
  • The battle of Jutland

    The only large-scale naval battle of the war.

  • The Battle of Somme

    The Battle of Somme
    July 1-November. 420,000 British soldiers were lost, 200,000 French died, 500,000 German soldiers died. This battle for many symbolized how horrific war is for many.
  • Germany Begins Air Raids on London

  • The Treaty of Brest-Litovsk

    Russia signs an armistice with Germany at Brest-Litovsk. The treaty required Russia to surrender Poland and Ukrain to the Germans. Russia was also required to pay 300 million roubles to German for the repatriation of Russian Prisoners.
  • The United States Declares War on Germany

    the U.S. retaliated against the Germans after they sunk the Lusitania and declares war.
  • The Hindenberg Line Collapses

    The Allied Powers push the German troops back behind the Hindenberg Line.
  • The Battle of Amiens

  • Turkey Signs an Armistice with the Allied Powers

  • The Armistice that Ends the War is Signed

    At 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, the Armistice that ended The Great War was signed in the French Town of Redonthes.
  • Treaty of Versailles

    Treaty of Versailles
    World War I officially ended with the signing of the Treaty. Occurred in Paris, France. A main portion of the Treaty was that Germany was responsible for the war and because they were they had to pay. The Treaty of Versailles caused debt and humiliation for Germany.

    Amelia Earhart Flies Across Atlantic Ocean
    Her bravery inspired many women. She was a pioneer and a first of her kind.
  • Social Security Act

    The Goat Depression lead to this Act which gave more benefits to the elderly, blind, disabled. This act was meant to provide help to families in need.
