    Harriet Tubman was a slave who escaped. Between 1849 and the Civil War, she went to Maryland and helped slaves escape. Harriet also became the most famous conductor of the Underground Railroad.

    An African American woman named Rosa Parks refuses to give up her seat on a bus to a white passenger because the whites-only section was filled. She was arrested, but this event inspired people to boycott the Montgomery buses for over a year.
