In the 1850s, around 40 000 Chinese arrived to capitalize on the gold rush. Despite the fact that immigrants from Italy, France, Germany and America also arrived to find gold it was then that Asian miners who became the target of a racist campaign to drive them out of the goldfields.

In December 1901 there was a policy brought in that would prevent any immigrant to enter Australia who had a criminal record, were insane, or had any illness or disease, were classed as a dangerous character. Immigrants were made to sit a dictation test which was used to exclude certain applicants that couldn’t use English well.

During World War II, many non-white refugees entered Australia. Most left voluntarily at the end of the war, but many had married Australians and wanted to stay. Arthur Calwell, the first immigration minister, sought to deport them, which started alot protesting.

The next major step was in 1957 when non-Europeans with 15 years residence in Australia were allowed to become Australian citizens.
