    At the end of WWII Palestine came under British control. During the war, the British made conflicting promises to the Arabs and the Jews regarding the area. They then promised the Arabs and independent state.
  • Sykes-Picot Agreement

    Sykes-Picot Agreement
    This agreement divided the provinces Ottoman Empire between Britain and France. In this agreement Britain got Iraq, Palestine, and the TransJordan. France got Syria and Lebanon. Also, the British supported the Jewish homeland, Palestine.

    This document was issued by the British. Jews thought that this document was the British promising them a home in Palestine. The Balfour Declaration talked about predujaces against Jews and that they were welcome in Palestine.

    World War Two started in 1939, existing of many important battles. The British fought the German and Italian in fierce desert fighting. In 1942, the British defeated Germany in the biggest battle of WWII. The German efforts for stopping the Suez Canal were stopped.

    U.N Partition of Palestine
    The U.N created a committee on Palestine to end British mandate and the partition of Palestine. The mandate was to be divided into a Jewish State, an Arab state, and a small zone including Jerusalem. In November of the same year, the U.N voted in favor of the partition.
  • Isreal Independence

    Isreal Independence
    The emergence of Isreal as a Jewish state in Palestine was the main political issue of the Middle East after WWII. The United Nations General Assembly created a special comittee on Palestine. The UN resolution was passed, and the British high commisiioner for Palestine departed. Thus, the state of Isreal was formed.

    On the fifth of June, the start of the war, Israel lead a surprise attack on Egypt and Jordan. Within a few hours one of the most powerful Arab armies nearly fell. On the nineth, Israel reached the Sinai Penninsula and gained control of it. On the last day of the war, June 11th, the war was stopped with pressure building on Israel from the US and Soviet Union.

    This was when Egyptian and Syrian armies ran surprise attacks on Israel. This was sad for Jews living in Israel because this was the day of Yom Kippur, the most religious day on the Jewish calender.These attacks gave an advantage to Egyptian in the Sinai Penninsula.

    Arab-Isreal conflict was brewing, and economic problems were also being faced. By 1975, the situation became very tense. Many Palestinians became members of the PLO (Palesting Liberation Organization. The purpose of the PLO was to create an independent state of Palestine.

    The Camp David Accord was when President Sadat and Prime Minister Menachem sighed this document. This document was the first fromal peace treaty between Israel and the Arab Country. The document stated that the Israelis will leave the Sanai Penninsula.

    The First Intifada was an uprising of Palestinian workers on strike throughout Gaza and West Bank. Palestinians flooded the streets, erected barricades and threw stones at Israeli soldiers. The Israeli army tried to stop the uprising, but failed.

    A turning point with the Arab-Isreal nations. The Oslo Accords were meant to keep peace by organizing meetings and talks.
