  • Invention of Basketball

    In 1981 basketball was first invented by Dr. James Naismith in Springfield Massachusetts and the first games were played there.
  • First Woman's Basketball Game

    The first women's basketball game was played at Smith College between the freshmen and sophomores. All doors were locked and no men were allowed to watch.
  • First Professional Contest

    The Brooklyn YMCA and the Trenton Basketball Team played at the Masonic Temple in downtown Trenton in a game that is believed to be the first professional contest in which the players were paid to play.
  • The Intercollegiate Athletic Assocation of the United States (IAAUS) was founded

    The Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the United States (IAAUS) was founded, and in 1910 it changed its name to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The IAAUS was founded at the urging of President Theodore Roosevelt in reaction to his concern over the growing amount of serious injuries and deaths occurring in collegiate football.

    The Basketball Association of America was formed. Charter members of the new league were Boston, Toronto, Providence, New York, Philadelphia, Washington, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Detroit, Chicago, and St. Louis. Name was later changed to the National Basketball Association (NBA).
