Manifest Destiny

  • Louisiana Purchase

    Purchased area West of Missisippi to the Rocky Mountains from France for $15 million. The large amount of territiory created uncertainty over existence of slavery. This caused increased economic and political tension.
  • Missouri Compromise

    Henry Clay began this Comprimise to balance the interests of slave and free states. Missouri would be known as a slave state, but would be balanced with Maine, a free state, which wanted to be separated from Massachusetts. Also, there would be no slave states from the new states in the Louisiana Purchase north of the Southern boundary of Missouri. This was to keep the balance and determine which were the free and slave states.
  • Election of 1848

    Lewis Cass, elected as President in 1848 created the term popular sovereignty. This allowed the people of each and every territory or area decide themselves whether or not they wanted slavery permitted.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Henry Clay formed a group of bills together benefiting the north and south. There were laws given to the North, free states, and South, slave states. South gets no slavery restrictions in the Utah or New Mexico territories; slaveholding was to be permitted in Washington D.C; Texas shall recieve $10 million; and a fugitive slave law. North gets were California was admitted as a free state; slave trade was to be prohibited in Washingtons D.C; Texas loses boundary dispute with New Mexico.
  • Kansas Nebraska Act

    Stephen A Douglas formed an act determining that new states north of the boundary deserved to be able to favor their sovereignty of slavery. Eventually, this would open lots of oppurtunity for lots of new farms.
  • Dred Scott Case

    Dred Scott was a slave fighting for his territory eventually given the oppurtunity to take it to court.
