  • ARCHDUKE FRANCIS FERDINAND

    ARCHDUKE FRANCIS FERDINAND
    Austro-Hungarian and Royal Prince of Hungary and of Bohemia, and from 1889 until his death. His assassination in Sarajevo precipitated Austria-Hungary's declaration of war against Serbia. This caused the Central Powers and the Allies to declare war on each other, starting World War I.

    Short for: Unterseeboot in German. Which means Underseaboats. Refers to military submarines operated by Germany, particularly in World War I and World War II.

    Was the German General Staff's early 20th century overall strategic plan for victory in a possible future war.
  • LUSITANIA

    LUSITANIA
    Was a British ocean liner, briefly the world's biggest ship. She was sent into war in 1914. She provided 50% more passenger space than any other ship and was fitted with new turbine engines, able to maintain a speed of 25 knots.

    Is a form of fighting lines consisting largely of trenches. Made to protect the soldiers fighting. IF theywere out in the open fighting, there would be 3 times the amount of casualties.

    The members of the Triple Entente were the British Empire, the French Republic, and the Russian Empire, Italy entered the war in 1915.

    Was one of the major battles during the First World War on the Western Front. It was fought between the German and French armies on hilly terrain north of Verdun-sur-Meuse in north France.

    Is a type of naval warfare in which submarines sink merchantmen without warning. Since there was no radar, Submarines could go undetected under the water.

    Took place on either side of the river Somme in France. The Battle of the Somme was one of the largest battles of the war; by the time fighting paused in late autumn 1916, the forces involved had more than 1 million casualties, making it one of the bloodiest military battles.

    Was a 1917 diplomatic proposal from the German Empire to Mexico to make war against the United States.

    A speech made by Woodrow Wilson. A general guideline for a post-war order. The address was intended to assure the country, and the world, that the War was being fought for postwar peace in Europe.

    Was the last German Emperor and King of Prussia, ruling the German Empire and the Kingdom of Prussia from June 15 1888 to November 9 1918.

    Was one of the peace treaties at the end of World War I. It ended the state of war between Germany and the Allied Powers. It was signed on June 28th 1919.
