MAJOR EVENTS - CIVIL WAR

  • Emancipation Proclamation

    The Emancipation Proclamation declared “forever free.” The slaves in those confederate areas still were in rebellion. This changed the war aim from keeping the Union together to the now ending story. It also changes any way of coming to a settlement and helps keep Britain away from the war.
  • Gettysburg Address

    On November 23, 1863 there was a ceremony to dedicate a cemetery. Lincoln gave a two minute speech and said, “ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL.”
  • Election of 1864

    The election of 1864 fell in the midst of the war. McClellan hates Lincoln for what he did. The Northern Copperheads were against the Union and Emancipation. The Copperheads and other democrats nominated the war hero general McClellan. The Republicans feared defeat and joined with the war democrats and called themselves the “Union Party.” Lincolns running mate was Andrew Johnson (southerner) to attract more voters. Johnson became president after Lincoln’s assassination.
  • Freedmen’s Bureau

    Freedmen’s Bureau was an organization that provided food, clothing, medical care, and education. It achieved great access in education and taught about 200,000 blacks how to read. Andrew Johnson did NOT like this and it expires in 1872
  • Lincoln’s Assassination

    On April 14th,1865 Abraham Lincolngoes to Ford’s Theatre to watch “Our American Cousin.” Pro-Southerner actor, John Wilkes, shot and killed Lincoln.
  • 13th, 14th, 15th, Amendments

    13th - abolished slavery in the United States (1865)
    14th - granted citizenship to all people born or naturalized in the United States (1868)
    15th - granted the black people the right to vote. (1870)

    The Jim Crow Laws

    The Jim Crow Laws segregated the South completely. They separated black and white areas and everything you can imagine. Schools, water fountains, bathroom, etc.
