Germany thought they could break the stalemate of trench warfare on the western front. Germany was convinced that Russia was on the verge of a revolution therfore about to pull out of the war, which would make it easy for Germany to attack France. The Germans succeded in defeating the French but had caused 400,000 casualties.

The battle started with Germany's attempt to cut off Britain's supplies (food, water, amunition, etc.) with U-boats. However, the British used most of their ships during the war to keep the sea-lanes open for their merchant ships.

The British tried a massive attack an the Germans to try and end the stalemate. The battle was supposed to be the big push that would end the war. Instead the battle was ascene of senseless slaughter, some of the worst of the war.

There was war over the control of Belgium between Germany and Great Britan. Germany was winning because they flooded Great Britan with gas. Then the Canadians came with wet clothes over their mouthes and were able to defeat Germany.
