    Europeans brought diseases such as smallpox to Canada West. These diseases spread and killed over 800 members of the Blackfoot tribe.

    In 1871, Aboriginals signed Treaty Number 1 and 2. This meant that Aboriginals would give up their lands and in return they would be given cash, reserves, schools and other rights.

    The Indian Act In 1876 the Indian Act was passed by the government. This act was mainly about the Indian Status and dealth with the management of reserves.
  • Disappearance of the Bufflo

    Disappearance of the Bufflo
    The buffalo's were the main sorce of food for the Aboriginal People. Eventaully, hunting buffalos became a very popular sport and the railways were built spliting up the buffalo herd. In 1879, all the buffalo's had disappeared which meant starvation for the Aboriginals.

    The Sun Dance was a traditional ceremony among the Aboriginal Peoples but, in 1885, the it became forbidden under the Indian Act.
  • Some Aboriginals Were Allowed to Vote

    In 1885 the government allowed for Aboriginal Peoples that were living east of Lake Superior the rights to vote if they gave up their Indian status.
  • First Nations need a Pass

    The government created a new law which stated that Aboriginals need a pass in order for them to travel off of their reserves.
  • Aboriginals Reserves

    Government made a law allowing for Aboriginal lands to be taken away if the reserves were near a city.
  • Change to Indian Act

    A change made to the Indian Act stated that Aboriginal reserves could be taken away for building roads and railways.
  • The Right to Vote

    In 1960, all Aboriginal Peoples on reserves were finally granted the right to vote in federal elections.
