Lewis and Clark's Journey

  • Expedition starts from Camp Dubois

  • First official cousel between representatives of United States and western Indians

  • The expedition is now in the Great Plains and will describe 178 plants and 122 animals that previously had not been recorded for science

  • Fort Mandan is completed and the expedition had moved in for the winter

  • Lewis and Clark send about a dozen men back downriver with maps, reports, Indian artifacts, and boxes of specimens, and the rest of the crew heads west

  • The expedition comes across the Great Falls of the Missouri

  • Sacagawea tells Lewis and Clark that they are nearing the home of her people, the Shoshones

  • The expedition goes into the Bitterroot Mountains, and almost die of starvation while going through them

  • The crew votes where to spend the winter, and they set up Fort Clatsop near modern-day Astoria, Oregon

  • The expedition splits up in order to explore more territory after re-crossing the Bitterroot Moutnains

  • The expedition returns to the settlements and reach La Charette

  • The expedition arrives at St. Louis and are welcomed back as national heroes
