Legislation/Acts/Wars, and Colonist Reactions

  • End of French & Indian War

The end of the French and Indian War ended with the Treaty of Paris. The treaty made the colonists angry, because they could no longer take land from the Indians, and the taxes were raised due to war debt.
  • The Sugar Act

This act raised the taxes on sugar and molasses, and it placed new taxes on other common materials. Colonists were angry with the act, because it hurt trade, and prevented merchants from taking legal action if their goods were seized.
  • The Stamp Act

This act stated that all printed material had to be stamped, which had to be paid for. Colonists formed the Stamp Act Congress, and boycotted English goods. The act was eventually repealed.
  • Declaratory Act

Though the Stamp Act was repealed, this act stated that the Parliament could still make laws for the colonies. This cause more protests from the colonists.
  • Townshend Act

New taxes were placed on glass, lead, paper, paint and tea, this act also legalized wrists of assistance (customs officers could enter any home and look for evidence of smuggling). This caused the Massachusetts assembly to form a resistance against Britain.
  • The Tea Act

This lowered the tax of tea to increase sale. However, colonial merchants thought the British were trying to put them out of business, and colonials didn't want to pay the tax.
  • Start of Revolutionary War

The Massachusetts Provincial Congress was formed, followed by a full scale rebellion. Some colonists supported the revolution, while others were against it.
