Events Leading up to the Civil War

  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    The Missouri Compromise was established in 1820 this added Missouri and Maine to the United States. At this time, the United States was splitting farther and farther apart from the division between slave states, and free states. Missouri came in as a slave state, and Maine came in as a free state, this Compromise also established the 30*36 line, which split the United States, above would be free, and below would be slave.
  • Nat Turner's Rebellion

    Nat Turner's Rebellion
    The Nat Turner Rebellion was a slave rebellion that occurred in 1831. Nat Turner led a rebellion to escape from their plantain, a few plantains onward, they were stopped, all people that were stopped were executed. This spread fear among the south, this lead to stricter rules and punishments for the slaves in plantains.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
    The Compromise of 1850 was made because California was coming into the United States, but there were 15 slave states, and 15 free states. The Compromise states that California would come in as a free state, but slave trade would be banned in D.C, and stronger fugitive laws would be put in place to please the south. As well as the rest of the Mexican Cession would be voted in to see if they would be slave or free.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Uncle Tom's Cabin
    Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote a book named "Uncle Tom's Cabin", this book showed the horrors and torture of being a slave in the south. The book blew-up in the North, this caused many to become Abolitionists. Even Abraham Lincoln recognized this book. The book did end up getting banned in the south, believing in falsely criticized their way of life.

    Kansas-Nebraska Act
    The Kansas-Nebraska Act was put into place in 1854, divided the land into 2 (Kansas and nebraska). This also would make the 2 be voted in as slave or free. This act would lead to battles in kansas, and is what was kick-starting the Civil War.

    Bleeding Kansas

    Bleed Kansas occurred during 1854 - 1861, this would lead to battles and riots. It started by Kansas being voted in as free/slave, people from both sides came in to vote. Pro Slavery won the vote, Anti-Slavery boycotted the vote, both sides armed themselves for battle. The first battle happened at Lawrence KS, which was the headquarters of the Anti. The Pottawatomie Massacre was led by John Brown on his Pro-Slavery neighbors, 5 people were killed. This lead to violence over 3 years.
  • Dred Scott v. Stanford

    Dred Scott v. Stanford
    Dred Scott, a Missouri slave, was taken where Slavery was illegal, when he came back to Missouri, he sued for his freedom. His claim was that he was free when he was taken to those areas where it was illegal. This case reached the U.S Supreme Court. The Supreme Court ruled that African Americans were NOT citizens, and that living on free soil did not make him free, and that slaves were property, which were protected by the 5th amendment. The south says this shows Congress could not ban slavery.
  • John Brown's Raid on Harpers Ferry

    John Brown's Raid on Harpers Ferry
    John Brown wanted to arm slaves so they can form a militia for a rebellion. He led a raid on the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry to get weaponry. When slaves get the word, they don't go, they are very afraid to do anything. Eventually, marines show up, John is then tried for treason and many other things. He is found guilty and publicly hung. Before death, he states "I John Brown am now quite certain that the crimes of this guilty land will never be purged away, but with Blood.".
  • The Election of 1860

    The Election of 1860
    Republicans have nominated Abraham Lincoln, the Democrats are divided and confused, the Third Party is the Constitutional Union Party. Abraham Lincoln wins all but 3 of the Electoral votes in the North, but none in the South. When he takes office, he assured the South that he has no plans on abolishing slavery, but spoke out on the secession. He ends his speech by saying "we are not enemies, but friends". His first act as president was making secession illegal.
