Language Development Timeline 0 to 18 Years of Age

  • 0-3 months

    0-3 months
    Vocalizing begins when the baby begins gurggling, sighing, cooing, and sometimes laughing.

    3 Months

    The infant responds by making vocal noises and sounds when someone is speaking.
  • 4 Months

    The infant begins to use what is called vocal play.
  • 6-7 Months

    The child begins to try and form words, words such as mama, by making the sounds and putting them together.
  • 8 Months

    The child begins to use gestures to show what they are wanting.
  • 9-12 Months

    The childs noise making and babbling begins to sound like real words being used when they speak.
  • 1 Year of Age

    1 Year of Age
    Usually speak their first words with meaning and continue to use hand gestures for words they may not know yet.
  • 18-24 months

    At this age the child starts to combine words, and also begins answering simple yes and no questions when asked.
  • 2 Years of age

    2 Years of age
    At this toddler age the child starts adding bound morphemes, which are words that include prefixes and suffixes. They also begin learning manners, please, thank you. Question things that they may see missing such as where is Mommy and Daddy?
  • 3 Years Old

    3 Years Old
    Begin speaking in grown up type sentences and using subjects and verbs such as why, when, where, and how.
  • 4 Years of Age

    4 Years of Age
    At this age the child is able to have a full conversation and talk about things they have done, are going to do, reasoning with things, showing feelings, etc. Also learning to recognize letter and number sounds completely.
  • 5 - 7 Years of Age

    5 - 7 Years of Age
    By this age 90% of the childs language is formed, the child is starting to tell stories that are true things and show a focus that have a start, middle, and a complete end to the story.
  • 7 - 9 years old

    7 - 9 years old
    At this age they begin to understand and comprehend jokes and the meaning of them, are able to figure out and process riddles and the simlarities in them. They develop their story telling abilities and give them a lot more definition as they tell them. They are also able to understand that some words have more then one meeting.
  • 9 - 12 Years of Age

    9 - 12 Years of Age
    The child is able to understand basic idioms, they can also pertain and use information they take in from written texts.
  • 12 - 14 Years of Age

    12 - 14 Years of Age
    At this age the child knows and can explain what the words they are saying mean, they can also explain the content they are using when speaking.
  • 15 - 18 Years of Age

    15 - 18 Years of Age
    By now they are becoming adults and their written type of language is even more complex than when they are using spoken language. At this point their vocabulary is somewhere around 10,000 words.
