  • Baba was born

    Amir states that "In 1933, the year Baba was born,,," (Hosseini 24). 1933 was a big year for Afghanistan and might have an affect on Baba. The year altered this country forever and Baba lived it.
  • Zahir Shah begins 40 year reign.

    1933 was "...the year Zahir Shah began his forty-year reign of Afghanistan..." (Hosseini 24) Zahir Khan was just the start of the terror to start in this country. Instead of having a reasonable amount of years to reign, this is just the start of the dimishing power of the people.
  • Amir is born

    Amir's life changed at, "...the age of twelve, on a frigid overcast day in the winter of 1975." (Hosseini 1) Since Amir was 12 in 1975, he was born in 1963. Without Amir being born, the story wouldn't be the same.
  • Baba build an orphanage.

    Amir talks about the time when, "In the late 1960s, when I was five or six, Baba decided to build an orphanage." (Hosseini 13). This orphanage is a big part of Amir's search for Sohrab. The orphanage was destroyed by the Taliban and that is when the reader just begins to really see the destruction the Taliban has caused.
  • Zahir Shah's cousin overthrows his 40 year reign.

    Amir remebers,"the night in 1973, the night Zahir Shah's cousin overthrew him," (365). After 40 years, the reing was finally over. However, the new reign isn't something the people are celebrating about.
  • Hassan gets his lip fixed

    Amir recalls, "that day back in 1974, in the hospital room, just after Hassans harelip surgery" (Hosseini 219). Hassan was always embarressed by his lip, but now he isn't. Baba was willing to fix it since Hassan was his other son.
  • Hassan gets violated by Assef

    While Amir looked from afar, "Assef knelt behind Hassan, put his hands on Hassan's hips and lifted his bare buttocks," (75). This event was one that would haunt Amir forever. Amir always felt guilty for that he didn't eun over and stop it.
  • Amir is victorious in the kite running ceremony

    Amir recalled, "that day in the winter of 1975, just after I had cut the last kite," (370). Amir finally gets the love and respect that he has always wanted from Baba. Baba always wanted a winning son and he finally had one.
  • Soviet Union invades Afghanistan

    The New York Times states, "...traced to the 1979 invasion by the Soviet Union and reaction both by the Afghanss and by their allies in the United States and Pakistan." (Times 2)
  • Amir and Baba fianlly in their new home

    Amir told Baba's reaction to USA by "Baba loved the idea of America" (Hosseini 125) Baba wasn't as excited when he actually was in America. Babe had an idea in in his head about America but they were not met.
  • Baba and Amir try to escape

    Amir told us how he "...vomited on a tangle of weeds, my retching and groaning dorwned in the deafening roar on the MiG." (Hosseini 113) This drive was the ride that took Baba and Amir to the next chapter of their lives. The drive was hard but overall worth it.
  • Amir graduates from high school

    Amir recalls when "....I graduated high school at the age of twenty..." (Hosseini 131). Amir and Baba finally had a real connection after the kite running ceremony. This sparked Baba finally seeing him as an adult.
  • Amir starts his love for Soraya.

    Amir started thinking about Soraya when "I aced all of my general education classes, which was a minor miracle given how I'd sit in lectures and think of the soft hook of Soraya's nose." (Hosseini 144) Amir is constantly thinking of Soraya after they met. This results in him making a weekly appearence at their booth to say hi to her.
  • Last Soviet Union troops leave Afghanistan

    The Soviets finally left Afghanistan, "...last Soviet troops left Afghanistan in February 1989, in what was in effect a unilateral withdrawal." (Times 2)

    Kabul gets showered with rockets

    Amir remebered when, ".... Mujahedin forces had showered Kabul with rockets between 1992 and 1996." (Hosseini 245) This event was one that I found very impactful. It helped me midly wrap my head around just how bad their situation is.
  • Pakistani Intelligence starts supporting Mullah Omar

    The New York Times states, "As early as 1994, Pakistani Intelligence officers start funneling arms, money and supplies to Mullah Omar's men..." (Times 3)
  • Afghanistan governmental power was divided.

    The New York Times states, "...by the summer of 1994, power was anarchially divided among competing warlords and individual fiefdoms.
  • Mullah Omar had almost 12,000 followers.

    Mullah Omar was becoming rapidly powerful, "By the end of 1994 Mullah Omar had nearly 12,000 followers..." (Times 2)
  • Amikr finds shoking story about a boy who was killed

    Amir aquired a magazine in the hospital that was "a Pakistani newspaper showing the face of a young boy who was hit and killed by a train" (Hosseini 347). This story reminded him of the pain that he saw in Kabul. This story really showed how nothing would be the same.
  • Osama Bin Laden lands at Jalalabad

    The Taliban helped Osama Bin Laden, "The Taliban also provided a haven for Mr. Bin Laden, who arrived by chartered jet at Jalalabad Airport in May 1996..." (Times 3)
  • Rahim Khan called Amir

    When Amir got a call Rahim Khan, Amir says "I have to go to Pakistan." (Hosseini 191) This call was the beginning of a chain of events that changed Amir's life forever. It brought him to KAbul and lead him to the last way Amir can atone for his past actions.
  • Amir finally arrives in America with Sohrab

    Amir finally took Sohrab and, "arrived home about seven months ago, on a warm day in August 2001," (357). This event changed Amir and Sohrab's life forever. For Amir, it was atonement. For Sohrab, it was freedom and a new life.
  • Attack on World Trade Center

    The New York Times states, "After the attack on the World Trade Center in New York on Sept, 11, 2001..." (Times 3)
  • Hamid Karzai is named chairman of government

    Alot occured in 2001, like "In December 2001, Hamid Karzai, a supporter and relative of Mohammad Zahir Shah, the exiled former kind of Afghanistan, was named chairman of an interim governement..." (Times 3)
  • Hamid Karzai is preisident of Afghanistan

    The former king now has a different name, "He took interim president in June 2002..." (Times 3)
  • Hamid Karzai elected actual president

    Afghanistan finally elected a real president, "...Mr. Karzai was elected to a five-year term as president in 2004." (Times 3)
