Kite Runner and the History of Afghanistan

  • Baba is born

    Baba is born in 1933 "and the year Zahir Shah began his forty-year reign of Afghanistan" (pg. 24). This quote shows a glipse of foreshadowing because it is only in chapter 4. It shows that Zahir Shar may have to do with an event later on.
  • Amir is born

    Amir says early on in the novel," It was there, in that little shack, that Hassan was born in the winter of 1964, just one year after my mom died giving birth to me" (pg. 6). This proves that Amir was born in 1963 because the quote states one year after. We learn early on that maybe a little bit of Amir's power over Hassan comes from age.
  • Hassan is born

    Hassan "was born in the winter of 1965" in a "little shack" (pg. 6). Hassan's mother was Sanaubar. Sanaubar left Hassan one week after Hassan was born.
  • Amir and Hassan run a kite

    Amir claims that he saw "Hassan run a kite for the last time" (pg. 55) This quote shows that later on in the chapter an incident occurs that explains why it is his last time. Assef violates Hassan and later on we realize Assef has not changed since the incident.
  • Little peace since when the Soviet Union invaded

    Suprisingly, a new country becomes the Islamic republic,"Afghanistan, officially the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, has known little peace since 1979. Now it si the scene of what has become the central military struggle for the U.S."

  • First Soviet Union troops parachute into Kabul

    The people protect him,"They do this to assist Babrak Karmal , who had become president in a coup within the Afghan Communist leadership."
  • Amir and Baba move

    Amir and Baba move to Fremont, California. Baba "loves the idea of America" (pg. 125). When they arrived, it was new to them seeing happiness and "watching boys at batting practice and little girls giggling on the swings in the playground." They moved because of the war.
  • Amir and Baba drive to Pakistan

    Amir and Baba are in the back of a truck with several other Afghans on the way to Pakistan. Amir begins to feel very car sick and so he "turned around, lifted up the tarpaulin, and threw up over the side of the moving truck" (pg. 111). All of the passengers are upset with Amir and his "weak stomach" but Amir thinks he has done nothing wrong. Baba was apologizing as if it were a crime
  • Baba and Amir move to California

    Since the Russians invaded, Baba and Amir moved to California. Baba "loved the idea of America" (pg. 125). In pakistan, it was a completely different environment. Now they would have a new life to start.
  • Amir graduates high school

    Amir graduated "from high school at the age of twenty, by far the oldest senior tossing his mortarboard on the football field that day" (pg. 131). Amir realizes he has made a huge accomplishment even though he is very old at the time. He knows he is becoming more independent and is going off to college after some persuasion by Baba
  • Amir gets a car for graduation

    Baba "reached into his coat pocket and handed me a set of keys" (pg.133). Baba said he needed it for college. Also, he said that the car was going to get a paint job, but Amir was thankful reguardless.
  • Flea Market

    In July 1984, "Baba set up shop while I bought two cups of coffee from the concession stand" (pg.139). Amir and Baba are trying to make all of the money they can. They are not making very much profit from the Flea Market though. Soon, Amir will be introduced to his wife later on.
  • Soviet Union rendered

    U.S. use weapons to shoot down the air support from the Soviet Union,"The Soviet Union was rendered largely useless by advanced Stinger antiaircraft missles supplied by the United States to the rebels."
  • Rahim Khan travels to Hazarajat

    There were many reasons Rahim Khan "went to Hazarajat to find Hassan's son in 1986" (pg. 203). One main reason he went was the he was "lonely." Rahim Khan was lonely because most of his friends had been killed or they escaped.
  • Last Soviet Union troops leave Afghanistan

    When the Soviet Union left, they left,"This was in effect a unilateral withdrawal, leaving behind a devastated country."
  • Mullar Omar had nearly 12,000 followers

    The Afghanistan president gained many followers,"By the end of 1994 Mullar Omar had nearly 12,000 followers and was rolling up to the warlords to the north and east."
  • Taliban provided a haven for Mr. bin Laden

    Taliban helped Bin Laden hide,"The Taliban provided a haven for Mr. bin Laden, who arrived by chartered jet at Jalalabad Airport and for Al Qaeda."

  • Massacre in Mazar-i-Sharif

    Two years after the Taliban banned kite running "they massacred the Hazaras in Mazar-i-Sharif" (pg. 213). The Hazaras are getting more and more hate. The Taliban are also taking control with bad visions in mind.
  • Hassan and Farzana are killed

    The Taliban "told Hassan they would be moving in to suposedly keep it safe until I return. Hassan protested again. So they took him to the street - and ordered him to kneel - and shot him in the back of the head. Farzana came out screaming and attacked them - shot her too" (pg. 219). Amir was so taken away by this. He started to regret everything he did to Hassan and he knew it was his turn to make up for it.
  • Rahim Khan calls Amir

    Amir "lowered the phone into the cradle and stared at it for a long time" (pg. 190). Amir's wife, Soraya, is very concerned about him going back. Amir tells her he has to though and she finally excepts and asks him if she should come and Amir replied no.
  • U. S. gets militarily involved in Afghanistan

    This is the date the U.S. got in the mix of the war,"The United States has been militarily involved in Afghanistan since 2001, when it fed an invasion after the Sept. 11 attacks by Al Qaeda."

  • Amir and Soraya

    Amir "thought of Soraya Taheri's sickle-shaped birthmark, her gently hooked nose, and the way her luminous eyes had fleetingly held his" (pg. 142). Soraya will soon be Amir's wife and they struggle to have a baby. Baba is dying and they want to have a kid before so.
