Kite Runner & the History of Afghanistan

  • War happened in Afghanistan

    Relating to the Afghanisan article, war started," As it turned out, they hadn't shot much of anything thet night of July 17, 1973" (36). This exciting event show how war began in Afghanistan and how the war would affect the story later. This is important because it shows a different life story being happened, like a shift in power and their personal life.
  • Hassan violated

    Amir witnessed an unexpecting event,"I could step into the alley, stand up for Hassan-the way he'd stood up for me all those times ... or i could run. In the end,I ran" (77).This major event triggers the plot in showing how Hassan's being violated and Amir witnesses it, but did nothing and just ran away because he is so scared of stepping up when Hassan saved him many times. This is usual because many people are scared of stepping up when they are in this type of situiation.
  • Amir wins kite contest

    Amir won kite contest and "I was throwng my free arm around Hassan and we were hopping up and down both of us laughing, both of us weeping"(66). Before Baba didn't really notice Amir's actions but after he won the kite contest Baba was so happy and proud of him. This finally proves how Amir was able t omake Baba notice and be proud of his actions. This is interesting because with one simple win, it can change someone's actions and feelings in caring about someone else they never noticed before.
  • Pomegrante scene

    Amir's guilt form inside causes him to say Hassan,"Hit me back! Hit me back Goddamn you! I wished he would. I wished he would give me the punishment I craved so maybe I'd finally sleep at night'(92). Amir is saying this because he want to atone for his sins he made so he wont feel guilty about it anymore. Hassan not hitting AMir back is very unusual becuase everyone would hit somoene back if they really were really mad and in this case Hassan didn't do this because he had good morals .
  • Hassan and Ali leave Baba

    Because of my cowardiness in not saving Hassan from the violation,"I watched Ali haul the lone suitcase carrying all of their belongings Baba's car outside the gates"(108). this moment of sadness gave Baba the tears running down his eyes becuase Hassan and Ali were one of the most important people in his life nad now they are leaving him. Hassan especially was the most important and it hurted him so much in how his son is leaving him even if Bab forgave him from stealing.
  • The theif scene

    Amir's selfishness in wanting hassan to leave causes him in "lifting Hassan's mattress and planted my new watch and a handful of Afghan bills under it"104). Just because of Amir wanting Hassan to leave so no one can know that he didnt help Hassan when we was violated he decides to do this harsh decision. Although AMir might fell guilty about htis but this is the best way so that he doesn'g get in trouble from Baba because he wanted Baba all to himself.
  • Soviet Union Invasion

    Afghanistan was a stable and secular country where its history,"can be traced to the 1979 invasion by the Soviet Union" (2).
  • Moving to America

    When moving to America, "Baba loved the idea of America. it was living in America that gave him an ulcer" (125).Both Baba and Amir moved to AMerica to start a new life and forgetting about the past. Specifically, starting a new life means Baba and Amir can finally spend more time together and knowing/caring more afor each other.
  • Baba DIes

    One day Baba coughed up some blood, so he went to the clinic finding out tha he has"cancer? Baba added casually"(154). Baba's life played an important role in this book where he had so many connections between the world and how his life was now depending on Amir when he went to America. Baba and Amir's connections just got better when they moved to America and now he suddenly dies, which ruins their last moments with each other. Baba is very speical to AMir and it justs breaks his heart.
  • Amir Gets Married

    Baba talked to General Taheri saying, "We honored that your family and ours will be joined"(168). Amir is getting married, finally proving to Baba that he can stand up for himself. This is important becuase it shows that Amir is now being independent, having his own family and taking care of them.
  • Soviet Troops Leaves

    Soviet troops disliked the peace talks being held, so "the last Soviet troops left Afganistan" (2).
  • Mullah Omar

    Mullah Omar had many followers from north to east, making a promise in restoring Islam to daily life in which,"he created a genuinely popular movement in a country weary of corruption and brutality" (2).
  • Osama Bin Laden

    Osama Bin Laden arrived at Jalalabad Airport, where, "the Taliban also provided a haven for Mr.bin Laden" (3).
  • Hassan Dies

    Amir just realized that he had no time in which he'd even"balrey had time to deal witht he fact that hassan was dead"(220). Amir has already been through so much problems, first Baba's death and now Hassan's death. In particular, Amir has just have so many sad moments in his life in where everyone is leaving him,and he didn't even have a chance to spend tha last oments with them. This interesting event shows that Amir really ruined Hassan's life and the only way to make it up is to save his son.
  • Sohrab helped defeat Assef

    Amir was fighting with Assef to try to save sohrab, and suddenly"The slingshot made a thutt sound when Sohrab released,hitting Assef in the left eye"(291). Amir was trying to sae Sohrab, but instead Sohrab saved him. This was special because Sohrab decided to do this not only for himself to be safe but also for Amir becuase he has the same morals as his father does in helping someone no mtter how much they hurted you.
  • Hassan is Amir's half brother

    Amir continously was thinking in how Baba treated Hassan, finally Amir had "the right to know I had a brother, from Hassan his identity"(225). This event triggers the whole plot in where Amir and Hassan were always really close to each other but never knew that they were this close in being brothers. After Amir knew about Hassan being his brother, it made him chage his mind in saving Sohrab and do this final thing for his brother.
  • Amir resuces Sohrab (Hassan's son)

    Amir had a hard decision to make in resucing Sohrab or not and he said,"Then I told him i was going to Kabul" (227).This might be a hard decision for Amir, but he proved that he could step up and finally help Hassan back in resucing his son. Besides that Amir can also atone for his sins and is all affected by his morals.This is very unusual because not many people are brave enough to step up after a bad situiation that they are in like how Amir watchd Hassan be violated.
  • After nine 11 attack

    After the nine eleven attack, "President George W. Bush gave the Taliban an ultimatum to hand over Mr. bin Laden," (3) refusing to hand him over U.S. joined forces with rebel groups.
  • Hamid Karazai

    Hamid Karazi was a supporter and relative of Mohammad Zahir Shah, in which the king of Afghanistan, "was named chairman of an interim government that replaced the defeated Taliban, making him the learder of the country" (3).
  • Amir runs kite for Sohrab

    Amir finally atoned for his sins in rescuing Sohrab, but now he does something else extrodinary, asking Sohrab,"Do you want me to run that kite for you? For you a thousand times"(371). Amir is now treating him as his son abd he does this because Air still has his heart for Hassan and their relationship will never be broken. This is interstig because hassan's heart never left Amir and they both said in the story "For You a Thousand times", loving each other forever.
  • Sohrab suicides

    Amir was trying to explain to Sohrab that he didn't have to go to the orphange, but it was too late, "I pushed the door open, steped into the bathroom, suddenly I was on my knees screaming'(343). This moment of saddness gave Amir a hard time because he just rescued Sohrab and now he's trying to suicide. Sohrab is the most improtant in his life right now and he can't just let him die, becuase he promised to take care of him.
  • Hamid Karazi (president)

    "he took office as interim president in June 2002,"(3) trying to gain peace adnd gain internation-aid for Afghanistan.
  • General Petraeus

    General Petraeus was an Iraq commander, recieving most of the credit for the success, and, "had taken charge of the United States Central Command in October 2008, with responsibility for military operaions in Iraq, Afghanistan and across the region" (4).
  • Obama

    Obama decided to remove the general, and became president, where, "In a speech delieverd Dec.1 2009, at West Point, Mr. Obama announced his plan to deploy 30,000 additional troops" (4).
  • Obama administration

    "Yet in a move away from that July 2011 deadline, the Obama administration changed its tone to increasingly emphasize the idea that the United States will have forces in the country until at least the end of 2014," (4) warning Tabilans that aggressive operations will continue.
